Advice For Dads Truck

Dad has a 09 gmc ext cab 2wd with factory 20 in wheels and its hard for him and mom to get in and out of. I put a set of nerf bars on it for him and he claims they just get in the way. He had both his hips replaced so he is cautious how he gets in and out. The 06 he had sat a lot lower than this one. Anyone have any ideas what to do next. Thanks

The plop down into the buick would be worse for artificial hips than trying to get into the pickup. Try power steps, or they do have step stools with like 2.5foot handles that come up the side, we use them in the hospital quiet a bit. May be a cheap easy fix.

I haven't been around lowered trucks too much, what does this mean?

Swapping the stock 20's won't do anything to help...

We had a trade-in recently (07 Sierra 900 series)that actually had a nice set of running boards

didn't look too tacky either...

call GMMobility and ask for fitters in your area. My dad had back surgery and they refitted his truck with a different seat cushion and made the seat turn to the outside of the truck and GM picked up almost 90% of the tab - oh yeah take you reciept to the dealer for the bars and get some of your money back all you need is a doctor to say they are for entry for your dads condition. As for the height problem I suggest dropping it I did my dads truck and it does help but he lives on paved highway and you may need to consider the terrain your dad will be crossing before doing so.

because most gm trucks sit higher in the back than the front you need to lower the rear more than the front for a level look (and vice versa for a lift). so a 2 inch drop in the front and a 4 inch drop in the rear would allow for a slightly lower step in height but will look nice as well.

depending on how tall they are you may want to go lower. and a smaller tire will also help. you may be able to fit smaller wheels instead of 20s, which will allow for a smaller tire. you just have to make sure the brakes will clear a smaller wheel.

I don t see how the nurf bars get in the way? Maybe he s stepping up with the wrong foot? My dad can t get in a Buick but can get into my truck with nurf steps. :jester:

put a 2/4 drop (or more if needed), the truck will still look good and it will be more practical for him that way.

The 6 inch oval tubes that come factory might work and feel better then the nerf bars. I have looked at power steps and they are costly but they do come out further then your standard steps. I say it will come down to how much you want to spend.
