I have an 04 Sierra 1500 V8 4.8L and i really need to get more power out of it...Any suggestions? i was thinking about opening the exhaust up to produce a little more power but i was curious to see if anyone had any better ideas.

-thanks

Real power don't come cheap! But, I'd start off with the basics: CAI(cold air intake), exhaust, and a tune. But, to get true, real, big, throbbing power you'll have to drop a 6.0l in that b*tch!

yeah i'm planning on buying a 2500 in about two years but being a college student i can't afford one yet. i'll definatly check out the cold air intake, thanks.

a cold air intake isen't going to give you anything but sound, want more power?

1) tune

2)regear

3) turbo charger

4) bottle of nos

5) white lightning(warning you wont have an engine after this)

1 and 2 would be your best bet the rest were kind of jokes  CAIs give you more sound with very very very minimal gain unless your driving balls to the wall pedal to the floor all day, they also allow alot of crap into your motor...the stock intake and exhaust provide more then enough flow for that engines potential output

Agreed on the CAI. 7hp for 300+ bucks. long tube headers is the way to go if you want exhaust. A good tuner can use CAI and exhaust to your advantage when tuning but these are all questions for the tuner. As for CAI letting crap into your motor i Have to disagree. A properly oiled CAI will actually prevent more sh*t from entering the intake than a stock paper filter IMHO. Rear end gears is a good idea 3.73s, 4.10, and even 4.56s will not produce more power but, will create more torque going to the road. 3.73s or 4.10s if you do a lot of long tripping, 4.56s for heavy towing, around town torque, or doing great brake stands lol.

check out what gears you have.... chances are they're 3.42s (common for the 4.8L).

if this is the case... then the biggest performance increase you'll get is from a regear+engine tune.

the regearing is actually important because being undergeared keeps your RPMs low... below the power band. so although gears dont make your engine more powerful, they'll allow you to utilize the peak power of your engine for longer and thereby make your "truck" more powerful when looked at as an entire system.

that combined with the mechanical advantage of lower gears really makes for a night/day difference.

id recommend 4.10s if you're running stock sized tires.

Re-gear and get a custom tune. You'll need the tune after the re-gear so shift points are right, speed-o reads right, and you'll get my HP out of it too.

The two go together. Its not like the old days when you'd change the little speed-o gear in the transmission.

Also, another fairly inexpensive power adder would be a cam swap and my last suggestion would be higher stall converter.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it has been dead for a while anyway. I have a 6.0L in mine and I'm saving up for the Bear Performance. You mentioned a cam swap. Would that help me? Is the cam and lifters the same thing? I am getting some lifter noise I think. I am getting some fast tick, tick, ticking sounds. I hear that these 6.0L engines are known to have a lot of lifter problems. Would a cam swap fix that? And does a cam swap need to be done before the tune?

I'm no expert, but a cam lifts the valves at different rates, lowing more air and yes, it does make a big difference depending on how aggressive you get. Swapping the lifters at that times a good idea too and may take care of your issue.

You can contact the manufacturer for a recommendation on what cam would suit you the best based on how you want your truck to run.
