Trailer Connector Wiring...

I'm working on finishing up the electrical connections for my rear view camera and am trying to find a power source that will give me constant 12V power, but shut off when the ignition is off so I don't have a constant drain on the battery. Anyone know if there's a wire back there that will do so? I've been looking at the electrical diagrams and thus far I haven't seen what I'm looking for.

Thanks! :)

On my 07 I ran into the same issue. I ended up having to run a wire all the way into the cab to the electrical center behind the Emergency Brake. GM actually has you use the same location on the Rearview Camera Kits as it bundles those wires in the chassis harness and runs everything to the front.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Ack! I was afraid of that. Guess I should have thought it through when I routed the coaxial cable from the front of the truck out to the back.

Oh well; guess I'll just have to route another wire alongside the coax. Not a big deal, just more time consuming :D

Thanks Travis! :)

Since I don't use a brake controller on my pickup I would tap into the the brake sense wire on the trailer connector. Then, I would go right under the dash plug in the trailer harness, that came with the truck so you can use a brake controller, and give the brake sense wire 12v from the ignition switch or preferred location. :) Just keeps you from running that extra wire. Or, you can just tap into the backup light wire, since it's just a backup camera. I know there's already 12v at the trailer connector, but it's not switched, I don't believe.

I agree with just tapping into the reverse wire. Depends how much current the camera draws I suppose.

actually, the simplest way would be to use the reverse wire to trigger a relay, let the relay draw power from the 12+ constant on the trailer wiring harness, bam, then the reverse lights will trip the relay but power is delivered from another source.

Too late.... I already ran the extra wire :D

And besides, I wanted to be able to turn the camera on while I'm going down the road (I'm thinking about adding a lockpick at some point) so if I'm hauling a trailer, I can keep an eye on the load more easily.

I always find that the ignition wire to the radio works best. It helps that I have an aftermarket radio and know which one it is.

Hey, I was just saying, no need to get mad and stick your tongue out me. :)

In the 07+ trucks there is no ignition wire to the radio like you are used to I don't believe.

I used my reverse wire when I first hooked the camera up in my 07 for a Power Source....and while it did work, there was a few second delay because the radio always went to the screen right away and the camera always took a second to fire up just like the reverse lamps......
