Premature Tire Wear

I have just put on 10,000 miles on my new gmc sierra 2009. I am already starting to show uneven tire wear. My son in law has a 2007 chevy 1500 and he states he has also had this problem even after he has had the front end aligned. the tire wear is just on the front tires. My questions is: is this a ongoing problem with the 2009 gmcs or chevys? I may be spoiled, but I had an Astro Van with 200,000 miles on it and only had to align it 2 times. I never had this type of tire wear problem. Thanks for your replies. Frank

This is not common.

What specifically are you seeing in the tires?

When you get an alignment, have them print out the spec sheet for you. A lot of techs take the lazy way out and don't adjust the camber/caster if they're just a bit out of spec.... the only way you'd know is tire wear which can take a long time.

I've got 12,500 on mine and both front tires are cupping on the inside. I'm hoping a rotation will help a little bit but I'm not real confident in that at all..

You've gone 12,000+ without a rotation? That's not good for the tires at all.... 6k is recommended. For people who run synthetic oils and change it at 5000-7500 i recommend rotating the tires every time they do an oil change.

To be honest, I thought my first set of kumho's went pretty quick, but the dealership claimed it was because of the 20's. I did rotate the tires about 6-7,000 miles but still only got 25,000 out of them.

Make sure you're running the recommended tire pressure and take it to the dealer to make sure the front end is in spec. I never had a problem with my stock good years, but I also rotated them every 6K. HTH

My factory tires cupped real bad. It was aligned too. I'm hoping its the crappy factory tires. But since I do have a popping front end at low speeds when I turn, I won't be surprised if its my ball joints causing the cupping.

I duno I have over 40k on my Pro-comp extreme A/Ts and they got another 10k left in em. I try to rotate them every 6k but a couple times it went 10k. (do alot of highway long distance driving). Truck is has suspension lift AND 20's and still got good mileage and wear out of them. I had the truck aligned when the lift was on, then again about 25000 miles after the lift just because I hit a ditch and bent a wheel.

Key is keeping them rotated and keep the truck aligned.

I did rotate the tires today and found the drivers side front was slightly feathered or cupped only on inside rib. What's really strange though is that the center 2 ribs looked a little more worn down compared to the other ribs. The remaining 3 tires showed no odd wear that I could see. I thought the dealer had rotated the tires when they replaced the wheels but they did not document it as so. Anyway it's done now and I'll monitor them to see how they continue to wear.

you're also forgettin one major thing... driving style... that can have alot to do with tires cupping, also towing heavy loads with an unbalanced trailer, all sorts of things, maybe you have a fat chick in the passanger seat causing it to lean to one side...

 been the fat chick route, never knew my springs could squeek so bad until she got in.....if your dry steering alot it will wear the tires down quick, suspension modifcations tend to put some extra strain on the tires, burn outs...running too low of pressure, 4x4s wear faster on the front tires also because of the added weight...i've seen alot of unhappy folks on here about some of the stock tires from the factory, so just get the alignmend checked out and go from there...if they are worn or cupped so bad just replace them...

So, I'm the kind of guy that will adjust the air in the tires, every morning till the DIC says all tires are equal at 35 psi cold, like the manual says, then verify with air tester and be within 1# of each other. 100% stock no lift, never haul anything, never been over 1/3 throttle, never take fast corners, passenger weighs 120#, never off road except my gravel driveway, and always baby it like a child in diapers. I'm assumimg a pothole this winter might have tweeked something.

I had some cupping on mmy stock goodyears and my tire guy suggested increasing the pressure a bit. I now run 40psi and have had no more problems.

I was running 40 psi till dealer replaced the rims and they put them to 35 psi and told me that was recommended. It seems that is when I noticed the cupping, after wheel replacement.
