Factory E-brake

Why is it that Ford can install their factory ebrake and GM can't

Whats missing or can't be added later?

You can add it to the new trucks. Just not the OE controller, if you do not have it to start with. Simple aftermarket upgrade. Not to mention most new controllers make it really simple get the new controller and harness to plug it all up easy....

If you must, Tekonsha P3, brake controller is by far the best thing on the market. I have 1 in each of my GMT800's....... I tow my goose neck trailer at least once a week with my 3/4 ton with 2 axles of brakes..... With out a doubt its the best controller I have ever had!

I already have a prodigy ebrake installed... but I'm curious why you can't install a factory OEM one.. what was left out or different when the vehicle was being built. Does it have a different master brake, different ECM with special tuning?.. You'd think that since the plugs are right there for an aftermarket one, the OEM would install just as easy. :jester:

I agree.. what's interesting is I don't think the dash pad even has the hole with the plug for the integrated controller.

My guess is.. the factory controller uses the bcm and may take transmission gearing or something into consideration or something.. I've read that you "don't want to bother" because there's "too many parts" but I haven't heard more than that.

I believe MS3DALE posted this once...

There are too many parts that are either different,or that need changed out.

The brake master cylinder, booster & chassis wiring harness are just a few of the parts that are different.

You would also need to add the switch, brake controller module, relay & dash trim piece to just name a few of the new parts needed.

Your truck also must have Stabilitrak,You also would need to get the BCM reprogrammed,And thats if the dealer would be willing to try and reprogram it,most won't due to liability issues.

And good luck with that because of this document...

GM has a document out(#PIT4729) that states you cannot add an integrated brake controler to a vehicle without with RPO code(JL1).

And RPO code JL1 has the controler.

You mean GM isn't putting e-brakes in the newer trucks? :jester::D:(:P What the hell! :troll:

Whoa, buddy.... don't jump off the deep end, especially since that's not what was said.

Wait.. im lost here. Are you guys saying i can't add a brake controller to my GMT900 to tow my toy box? Cause that would suck!!

You can add any aftermarket controler you like, just not the factory oem integrated one.

If the controller is so incompatible with the most commonly configured trucks, how can GM install it at the factory for only a $200 premium.

I know Ford's controller can be added post-purchase VERY easily, and it's a $230 factory option. I know there's no direct comparison here, but...

Without an E Brake set up, you have a grocery getter.

:jester:

Some people tow trailers that don't require electric brakes....
