Towing, And What I Should Do Before?

Hey guys,

 

I tow regularly with our 08 F350 Powerstroke but we have to take to trailers on our next trip. We are gunna use my 2008 1500 5.3L with 4.10 gears and towing packedge.

 

The book says I Should be able to tow 10,500lbs, And the trailer im taking is 8,200lbs.

 

I am going to install a break controller as my truck did not come with one, but is there anything else i should be looking into?

 

Maybe Air Bags in the back?

 

We are gunna be traveling through the hills here in B.C through the rockies, and it will be about a 1,700km trip, and the truck has 50,000kms on it now, Should I change the coolant and trans fluid before I go?

Yeah, I'd check/change all the fluids and get the weight distribution hitch and your planned brake controller. That's a lot of weight up and down mountains.

I think some rear air bags would help alot. I just ordered some for my new Sierra. I tow my boat (24' Pathfinder that's around 5000 lbs) and it squats the rear suspension a little more than I like. I think the bags would keep the rear end from squating down as much and probably would help with the ride also. A weight distributing hitch would help and a brake controller isn't a bad idea either.

I agree, it's a bit much, wut you'll be OK.

 

Yes to the W/D hitch and trailer brake controller. The Tokensha Prodigy is a great one.

 

There is a "happiness factor" that trailer folks use. Basically, it's a factor of .66. If your truck is rated for a trailer weight of 10,000 pounds, you will be a fairly happy camper pulling a trailer that weighs 6,600 pounds ... and each couple of hundred pounds more simply adds to the "unhappiness factor."

 

And your trailer quite probably will be considerably heavier than the 8,200 pounds. The dry weight that the trailer companies quote is usually low. Add water, propane and Mamma's dishes and you're prolly gonna be knocking on the door of 9,000++ pounds.

 

Hey, just take it slow, use your tow/haul mode and remember that the 5.3 engine SIMPLY LOVES TO REV. You'll be just fine.

PS. I recently downgraded from a 2006 2500HD Duramax. I simply did not need it for the trailer towing that I do. Your half-ton will do GREAT!!!

Remember the towing weight is for the driver in the truck. Any passenger, gear, stuff in the bed and the tongue weight will have to be deducted from the tow weight. A weight distributing hitch with sway control is a must.

 

A trailer that weights that much will have a tongue weight of 1000 to 1300 lbs. That 1/2 ton will need all the help it can get.

The trailer itself is 3,000lbs and the car that will be in it is 4,300 pounds. Add gear and a couple people im just over the 8,000 range.

 

 

I feel that it should do just fine,I will add the bags and brake controller as the company is paying for it:)

If your bumper pulling that distance.... Weight Distributing hitch would be nice. As well as some sort of helper spring or bag.... Get a good Brake Controller Tekonsha P3 is the best thing on the market. I have been selling brake controllers for around 10 years.... I have been using them many more years than that however...... I have used several different brands and flavors......... I have a P3 in both my GMT800's..... All I am going to say is Rave reviews...

 

What are you towing????? Special tie downs maybe needed..

When I had the Tundra and was regularly on the Tundra forum, there were many folks there that tow 8-10k lbs without much issues. The tow ratings on these trucks are fairly similar. Why are there so many guys on here afraid to tow that much? I have never tow anywhere near that amount. I figures the 6.2l would tow as much if not more than the Tundra since the Silverado does have a better frame. Am I wrong?

Get the airbags.....and brake controller. I drive a 2008 2500HD 6.0 and with my small 28 5th my tail drops 2 and 1/2 inches from stock height. Real b&tch when driving at night.And you can not adjust your headllights....the bags will help you see and give you a much better ride.

 

I have travelled the hill in lower BC close to the Alberta border in the South East and some of them will be a challenge. 5 miles uphill on a slow incline or worse going down. Check your brakes before you go and watch them during your travels.

I don't think you're wrong, except that a 5.3/4-spd isn't going to pull as strong as a 6.2/6-spd (or the Toyota 5.7/6-spd). That said, some Tundra owners push way past the ratings on the truck and then brag about it, almost as if they're trying to make a point. Doesn't make it smart. I tow a 7k lb camper (loaded weight) plus the family w/ truck in sig, and feel that it's a fair match. I won't win any races and use 2nd on longer/steeper pulls at hwy speeds, but it's a solid/stable setup. The 6.2/6-spd or Tundra 5.7/6-spd would definitely add power/torque, but neither would improve stability/safety. I care far more about the latter than 0-60 times. I have looked very closely at the Tundra 5.7 in the past as an option for towing the camper, so I've driven a few.

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
