Straight 30

I was wondering if I can run straight 30 oil in my 4.8 and 5.3 liter trucks. They are both 07, one classic and one is the nbs. I know guys run it in older trucks, but didn't know if it would hurt the newer trucks? Thanks

Will not hurt a thing. Might affect fuel economy a slight tad but that is about it.

+1

But why would you want to?

I'd have no problem using it during the warm months. Depending on your winter temps you might want a multi-vis oil. These engines already have a cold start knock problem from time to time that might be more noticeable when it's super cold.

I have ton for the tractors.

I figured thats why you were asking about straight 30! What brand do you use? 30W 'Non Detergent' seems to be getting harder and harder to find. Thats what i run in my John Deere 50.

I just looked on there website and under specialty oils they do make a Non-Detergent Motor oil. So i might look to get some. The place i had been getting it doesn't carry it anymore.

Thats what I would like to know. If you look on a bottle of non detergent oil it will say not for use in motor vehicles.

And to the op you can use 30 weight in the summer...but it should be API ILSAC approved. And detergent oil.

Really? Hmm...well i use it in my John Deere 50, 1956 model. So when you say 'motor vehicle' i don't know if you mean auto's or motor as in not my tractor either. But when my grandpa had the tractor he used non detergent, dad did when he had it, now when dad was going to sell a tractor last year i bought it to keep it around as i hated to see it go, and i use it to haul wood home. Anyways, I am under the understanding if i ever go through the motor on the tractor after that i can run straight 30 with no problems. But running a regular 30 weight oil will 'clean' the motor and all the debris/sludge in the to bottom of the motor will stir up and cause problems with the motor. Correct me if i am wrong, but i hate to try the regular 30w and then sit there and need to spend $$$ to go through a motor that I didn't need to. And up until lately it was no big deal to find non-detergent. A local farm shop carried Farm Oil brand, but this year when i went to get it they said they no longer make it but that the iso-30 hydraulic oil is the same stuff supposedly to just run that in my motor. I said no thanks and figured i will find another brand that still makes it. I see Cen-pe-co still makes it and today found out Castrol does as well. I only need a little under 2.5 gallons to do an oil change on it. So its cheaper to run the non-detergent then cause motor problems. Whats your take on it?

Just my opinion...I have been fooling with engines since 1958 and I would not use non-detergent oil to oil a door hinge...But thats just me.

I personaly wouldn't want to use any non-detergent oil in these old engines - as you really have no idea as to what specs it does meet (if any). Rather, I'd suggest pulling the pan and cleaning out any sludge deposits that you can. Then start using a good modern detergent oil meeting Diesel (compression ignition engine) specs. Change at short intervals the first couple times.

Its a gas tractor. But I will have to ask my friend, he is a mechanic at the John Deere dealership.

run some Dello 400 oil in it. gas or diesel engine will clean up the insides real well. it may take a few changes, but will do a very good job. in the tractor i would run it all the time..

30W will make short work on the oil pump when its cold. Clearances in modern engines are too tight for a straight weight oil. Lack of oiling at start up will shorten the life of the engine. Dont do it, use the reccomended oil Gm states on the oil cap 5W-30.
