2002 Suburban - Flush Dex-cool Anti Freeze

Recommended Posts

I want to remove 100% of DEX-COOL antifreeze from 126,000 mile radiator/motor and replace with 50/50 Prestone. I was told all this type of antifreeze must be removed. What is the procedure on doing this??

There's a drain cock on the drivers side bottom of the radiator, with a hose attached to it. Drain it from there, then go buy some system flush from wal-mart or an auto parts store a and follow the directions to make sure you get it ALL out. Why do you want to do away with dex-cool, I might ask? Is it getting rusty or discolored? I did away with it myself following this procedure, I just want to know why you are doing it. Make sure you flush it all out, before adding any antifreeze to it, because that will just be wasted anti-freeze and you'll have to do it over again.

What's the deal with DexCool?? Some of the best systems I have ever owned were filled with dexcool. Now when I say best I mean that they were he highest mileage and longest lived systems without replacing components in the system.

DexCool is like any other antifreeze in the fact it should be changed yearly. Forget the 10 year/100,000 mile BS and change it yearly.

My 1995 blazer was well in the 250k's when I sold it. At that time I replaced for the first time the water pump and thermostat. The system was flushed, drained, and refilled with a 50/50 mix of DexCool every fall.

That is my two cents on the whole green vs yellow vs purple vs red vs clear vs orange antifreeze. Just keep the system maintained and you will not have problems.

the inlet/outlet heater hoses have quick disconnects. I want to remove the heater hoses and reverse flush the heater core. Which heater hose is the inlet? Driver or passenger side?

If Dexcool is so bad why are all MFR's going to it even Ford and Chrysler.

Nothing wrong with Dexcool just the owner/operators.

If your completely changing it out to another type, refill the system 3-4-5 times with clean water to get it all out/diluted before you pour some other type of coolant in there.

Even that won't do it completely....you need to open up the plugs on the engine block too if you want it all out. I agree w/ some of the others here though....total waste of time.

Utter waste of time flush odmr drain and refill with 50/50 dexcool mix. I use distilled water in my systems.... I have way too many miles and years on dex-cool it is good stuff.... but does not like oxygen in the system from what I have heard from some GM techs.

Can someone tell me which heater hose is the inlet coming out of the firewall? Driver or passenger side? The inlet/outlet heater hoses have quick disconnects. I want to remove the heater hoses and reverse flush the heater core.

it sure is good to know that most of the members here are logical and realize theres nothing wrong with Dex... just needs proper maintenance like anything else.

its really easy to figure out... start your truck up, let it get to operating temp, turn on the heat. One line will be hotter than the other.... thats the inlet.

The inlet will be a slightly smaller fitting, the outlet is the larger one. It's your truck and you can do whatever the hell you want with it! That's the beauty of owning something.

Drivers side inlet. Passenger side outlet. It's not rocket science. Looking at how it is plumbed at the WP tells you. At least on a 5.3.
