Installing A Trans Temp Gauge And What Fluid To Use

I have an 87 Chevy with a 400 turbo trans that I'm making into a mud truck.

I want to install a trans temp gauge and would like to install it in the line going to

the trans cooler. Which line should I install it in, the top line or the bottom?

(looking at the lines on the trans)

Also what type trans fluid should I run?

What ever line goes to the top of the cooler is the pressure line. You will want to run what fluid is in the tranny to start with. If you are buying used, it probably has the Dex3 in it. If you buy new, you can run the Dex5 which I think is synthetic.
