rpickle Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 New guy here. I am looking a '95 Sierra Ext. cab that has suposedly lost its transmission. I would like to replace it with a used one myself. Will any 4L60E work? There are several on CL and some of those are from cars. Another question, can I install a 700R4 if that is what I find available? Since it isn't electronically controlled, would I need a different computer? Sorry about the questions. The truck is supposed to have about 200k miles. Body is supposed to be in very good shape. I am planning on going to check it out Friday, so that gives me a day or so to weigh my options. Appreciate any info. Rick
rodram Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 a 1995 4L60E out of a truck is a transmission unique to that year ... if you are looking for a donor truck to take the transmission out of you will need to find a 1995, and then stick with the 2wd or 4wd, whatever your truck has. I don't know about the 700R4 You could also price out a total trans and torque converter rebuild from a reliable transmission shop ... if the truck is in otherwise good shape and you plan to keep it for a while.. this might be a good investment... any transmission from a donor truck might be just about as bad as the one you are replacing.
rpickle Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 Wow, I didn't know they were THAT specific! Yeah, I'm not too crazy about the risks of a used tranny. I'll price a rebuilt. Thanks Rick
Mike G Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I would say you could pick up a rebuilt unit for about $750 and install it yourself. If you have a shop go through and do it all with the various upgrades available, about $1300 (USD). --Mike
