Has anyone changed the fuel pump in their Suburban by cutting a flap/hatch to the floor? Any tips or experience is welcome.

No, I've never done a suburban that way. But, back when third gens were popular and came out with tuned port injection, many people made them selves a door under the carpet in the rear hatch. I knew many people that did that, when I was in high school. They took a piece of plastic a little bigger than the hole and siliconed it over the hole and put the carpet back. It wasn't that noticeable unless you felt around for it.

as 2001Silverado364 said, I've heard of it done plenty of times on F-body cars, but not so common on trucks. It can be done though. I've only changed pumps on trucks, which of course are easy, just pull the bed.

A friend who worked for a Ford dealer told me about this farmer who cut a hole in the floor of the trunk of his car to replace the pump. After all that he found out it was not the pump that was his problem. Did not want to pay the dealer to fix it.

Cutting around fuel tanks could result in a whole new meaning of firing it up.

^ Yep, torch would be quick and neat...like I said post #3 can you not drop the tank...also the floor pan adds strength to the structure of the truck...cutting could/would weaken such, no? Let us know what you do...

The plan is to use cutting wheel to gently open up the floor. After changing the pump install a piece of overlapping aluminium sheet and glue it in place with gasket silicone + some screws. Yes, I could drop the tank but this seems like much easier way of doing it. In my Volvo STW there's such a door installed in factory. Well, I'll have to think it through again when the pump arrives.

I have not dropped an 02 Sub tank but sounds like more trouble to cut than to drop? Is the floor flat (no humps or ripples) over the pump? Lets us know and pics if you do cut...hope no gas fumes (like in slight leak) around when cutting...

its the same aas a truck just cant slide the box back, still pretty simple to drop the tank also...its not hard. just dont kink any lines. only thing you gotta worry about. and try not to use an impact, strippin, or breakin off a bolt on the tank straps is NOT fun.

I cut one in a 1995 Blazer..... I got TIRED OF DROPPING the tank. I cut a 6x6 hole above the sending unit flanged the edge cut a panel 7x7 and weather stripped the flanged area an drilled and riveted in nutserts. Then I bolted down the panel.

 

It is still just like that. I passed it on my way to work.

 

I installed a zipper. Haha
