Tire Help!

Its time for me to replace 2 tires (last 2 were done at 10K). But I don't like those Genral AMERI*660's. The side walls are way to soft and sometimes make quick reaction turns feel delayed. So i'm going to change them all. I'm looking for all-season to all-terrain tire. Something thats good on the freeway, but won't leave me suck off-road. Also I need something good in the rain. I'd like a thick tire wall. I'd like a firmer ride too. Feeling freeway dividers and every bump on the road conforts me (more driving input) and doesn't annoy me.

I just bought Cooper Discoverer ATs, not a big name tire, but not a big price either! I got 8 plys (Load Range D) and they did firm up the ride some over my Firestone Steeltex's 6 ply (Load Range C) maybe because I am running 60 psi instead of 50 like in the 6 Plys ! I havent had them in the rain or off road yet, but like the looks! The other one I was considering was the Yokohama Geolander AT+IIs, which are supposed to be a good all around tire!

Now you really need to ask yourself a few questions. How much do you want to spend? What Exactly do I want my tire to be able to do? What size do I want?

Based on what info was given I'd say you would be well off with a Pirelli Scorpio All Terrian. Great all weather traction, decent price but may leave you stuck in a stocker. Or some kind of Cooper All Terrian tire.

There are alot of good tires out there that will compliment your 2wd truck. The important thing is to get something that has a higher load range than what you have. If you have a "p" rated tire than a "c" would probably be sufficient. If you have a "c" then go to a "d".

An "AT" tire would look a little out of place on a 2wd truck. Basically look for a tire that has alot of "sipes" (little razor like cuts across the tread blocks), and some channels for the rain that run around the circumfrence of the tire.

The sipes will give both rain and snow/ice traction, and the grooves will channel the rain.

The Michelin LTX M/S tires that I am running would look good on a 2wd and would be the answer to all your needs. The problem is, they are pricey. However they would be a great 60K mile tire!!!

I agree with Shaners on the Michelins.I had a set on my 91 silverado when I sold it.They had 40k on them and you couldn't even tell.I also ran a set of the Cooper AT'S on my company truck,they did well also.The Goodyear ATS is also a good tire.I think it's just a personal choice on how much of an aggresive tread you want and how much you wanna spend.I really got a good deal on the michelins at Sam's Club........Gun

I went from 6plys to 8plys, which is a stiffer tire! I was wondering if that puts a lot more stress on the wheels or on the suspension versus the 6 plys? I never really thought much about it when i got them, but dont regret getting the 8 plys!

The coopers have a 50,000 miles treadlife warranty so I hope I am good for about 40,000!

I have Pathfinders. They are made by Goodyear. They Look slightly less agressive then the Wrangler AT's, but are still agressive for mild Off-road, and work well on regular street/freeway driving. Slightly noisier than stock because of the tread agressiveness, but handling is good. They are cheaper than the BFG's and the Wranglers. In my opinion good alternative. For 2WD I agree with Gunn & Shaners. I had the Michelins on my 97. Very nice tire, I think a 50 or 60k tread wananty as well. Let us know how it works out.
