I have a quick question for everyone. On my 2002 Silverado 2500HD the dipstick reads it is full with only 5 qts after an oil change. Obviously the 6.0's take 6-6.5 qts so I can't understand this. I bought the truck with 150,000 miles on it and it's done it since I bought the truck. I rebuilt the motor recently so I know there's nothing blocking anything. The only thing I can think of is either the Dipstick or Dipstick Tube... Anyone else have any ideas?

On my 5.3 liter engine the 6 quarts includes the oil in the new filter.

It takes 6 quarts with a filter change. After the oil and filter change run the engine then cut it off and let the oil drain back to the pan, then check it. there also could be a problem with the dip stick...some one may have put the wrong one in there???

That is what I'm thinking.

I just checked it and still over full with only 5 qts. I checked with GM and the part number on the dipstick is the correct one listed for the truck, but there are two small rivets on the dipstick (it's a two piece dipstick) I'm thinking that maybe it broke and someone fixed it or made it the wrong length. I may just get a new dipstick and tube to try it. There's a TSB for two different dipsticks from GM so maybe even though the VIN comes back to the newer one it has the old one on it.

I think you have the correct dipstick. My 2003 Suburban 6.0 motor and my last Suburban with the 5.3 motors both have the dip stick with the two rivets. Jim

You could always fill it with 6 qts and re-mark the dipstick, then sleep well at night

If you rebuilt the motor did the dipstick tube get removed? Might not be seated fully into the block.

+1 That's what I would do. You know it needs 6 quarts so put 6 quarts in it.
