Wireless Internet Issues

We just upgraded to Comcast high-speed internet but are having some trouble getting the wireless set up. We purchased a NetGear router and have already set it up. The setup went perfectly and was done in less than 15 minutes. Our problem is with the connectivity. We can see the network on the list of available networks and log on to it with the password. Once it connects, it says there is limited or no connectivity but it has full bars.

I've tried restarting the computer, the modem and the router but nothing is working. Any ideas on why it won't fully connect?

Also, I'd like to use the WPA2-PSK security setting but not sure if our computers are supported for that. How can I tell if they are supported for that sort of security or encryption?

Thanks!

Sounds like a security issue between the computer and the router. Have you tried connecting to the router without any wifi security set up? See if your connectivity issue goes away. Have you tried connecting a different computer to the network? See if its your computer that may need the wifi settings erased and re-entered. If all else fails, try doing a reset on the router, and then doing the set up again.

Just some suggestions.

I am no computer expert but had very similar problems this spring with a wireless router install. It was a software that was installed with the wireless modem, it was really not needed on my system. My notebook was already setup from the 'get go' for wireless and the programs were in conflict. Once that software that installed with the modem was removed, everything worked.

Might be your problem, software conflicts. I screwed around for a week trying everything and a computer expert friend took 5 min to find out the problem and fix it.

I would try it first without security enabled so that you can prove it is one of the encryption methods that is holding you back which it probably is. Also, check your computer specs to see what protocols are supported by your wireless device. Older models won't support anything other than WEP unless there was a driver update.

Reset the wireless passwd (WPA) on the Netgear router and try again.

Some wireless routers will allow you to 'connect' with an incorreect passwd, but you will get the 'limited connectivity'.

Not sure why this happens, perhaps to fool people trying to get into your wireless router that they have the correct passwd, but all the time they don't.

As suggested, try without any security enabled to ensure your computer is working properly with the wireless router. Then enable the security.

Also, nothing wrong with Netgear stuff.

Not sure if someone mentioned it.... but the FIRST step is to make sure the modem is connected. Forget about the router... look at the modem lights and see if its sending/receiving.

Your wireless network strength has nothing to do with internet connectivity. ... it just means you're connected to your router. The likely issue is either the modem is not connected to the internet OR the modem is not communicating with the wireless router.

I always plug into a router with an ethernet cable to set up the network.

I agree with Matt_. You are connecting to the wireless router just fine. Your wireless router isn't connecting with Comcasts modem. From what I've seen Comcast only gives out one IP address, so if you didn't shut down the modem it won't release/renew. Shut down both the router and modem. Turn on the modem first, let that come up, then turn on your router. It should work.

I played with it a little this morning before I went to work and tried it with no security settings and it was able to connect. We have one laptop that we used to configure the wireless hardwired into the router so we know that it works. Once I removed the security from the router I was able to connect the second laptop wirelessly so it seems that it was a security issue.

We had it secure with basic WEP so I might try WPA1 or WPA2 and see what happens. I might try shutting down the modem and router again just to make sure.

Also, check your computer specs to see what protocols are supported by your wireless device. Older models won't support anything other than WEP unless there was a driver update.

Where can I find this? I'm running XP with ServicePack 2 at the moment so I should be able to use WPA1. I'm not sure if I have the update to be able to use WPA2 though.
