Steering Wheel Shake

Recommended Posts

I had my tires rotated a few weeks ago and now when I slow down my steering wheel shakes. It didn't do that before the tires were rotated. Sometimes it will do it taking off but then smooths out, but then slowing down it shakes pretty good when I get around 35 - 45 mph. Only does it around those speeds, mainly while slowing. I got a 2006 GMC Z71 factory 17 inch rims and 285 BFG All-Terrains. Wheel weights are in place so I don't think it would be a balance problem, but I'm no mechanic. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

Thanks in advance

First thing I would do is rotate the tires again to see if it goes away. It's an easy way to eliminate a variable that could otherwise send you on a wild goose chase.

If you rotate the tires and the vibration is still there, it's likely being caused by warped front rotors. There's a number of causes for this. Although it doesn't happen often, over torquing the lug nuts can warp the rotors. However, depending on how many miles you have on the truck it could also be coincidence.... its a tough thing to prove.

Yea, I'm trying to avoid that goose chase! Truck has just over 50,000 on it. Rotating the tires back sounds like a good place to start though. Thanks.

Matt,

Took the truck back to the shop and it was the rotors. Had them resurfaced and new brakes put on the front and went ahead and had front tires rebalanced now all is good!
