Undercoated Wheel Wells Today

Recommended Posts

I undercoated my rear wheel wells today.. I was going to go with the liners but decided to go this route today.. 45$ later at wally world I walked out with five cans uf rustoleum rattle can undercoating. 2 hrs later and a pissed off GF its finish and it looks amazing. Longest part was the prep then sprayed away. Im going to see how long this lasts before I paint it so it stays shiny. I would recomend this to anyone. Very easy to do.

Thanks

I just did mine again this year, I just did them last year. But from my house to black top its 4 miles, so throughout the year they get gravel thrown at them alot. They held up well but in the rears where the rocks constantly are hitting they wore through. So I re-coated them and put extra on, so will see how it holds up as well. If you don't drive on gravel you will be fine I am sure.

5 cans??? Holy crap. I think I used 2 on my 2000 when I did it. How thick did you put it on?

What did you do to prep for the undercoating? A cleaner/degreaser or something like that? I've been wanting to do it to mine also.

I did mine, but used the herculiner do it yourself bed liner material. This stuff coats really well and wears like the bed liner, so does not peel or chip. Got a can from local parts store for $45 bucks.

Here are some photos when I did my 2000. Basically cleaned it real good then scuffed it all up with some scothbrite. Put some drop cloth around the body so I didnt get any overspray. Not to bad but I would suggest taking your time.

I went the easy route on the 2010 and got the plastic liners (last pic) with the protection pkg

Yea five cans! haha I wanted it on there as thick as I could. I used a scotch brite pad to scuffin it up and mineral spirits to clean before spraying. I could have gotten away with 3 cans but I has already bought 5 so I just used it. Covered up all the globs that I screwed up. Ha! Looks awsome I acutally got some compliments today from a couple people. It's amazing how many other people look at that stuff besides me. Just looks finished now instead of un-finished. Well worth the time and money...

Did it to mine this past summer with the 3M stuff. I will have to do it again next summer cause i already see where the rocks have been hitting it and where the white paint shows through. I thought about maybe using a heat gun to try to hardin it quicker and better then just leaving it sit for a while, will that help? If nothing else i figured i would just get the plastic wheel well liners.

    • From where I'm sitting this sounds like a compatibility problem. I'm assuming the 2007 was a 900-series truck, and not an 800-series (they were sold side-by-side in dealerships that model year), since it starts and runs.   This is why I HATE post-2006 vehicles. Everything becomes a huge problem when you try to keep the thing running for longer than the manufacturer has designed it to.    I can't remember when Global-A architecture started - either '10 or '11. For your sake, you had better hope it's '11, or you're going to be spending some BIG money to correct this cluster-eff. That's something you need to find out before doing anything else. You may have several computers bricked ... but the fact that it runs tells me you MIGHT be ok here.     EDIT: Just did a quick refresher. You're screwed. This is Global-A. The 2 systems are NOT compatible in the slightest. Once you get the correct engine in there that IS compatible, you're going to need to see how many computers are locked. Absolute NIGHTMARE to straighten out, too. Your buddy might be better off cutting his losses and finding something else.   Welcome to post-2006 vehicle electronics. This is why I quit the industry, and drive nothing built after 1994. This stuff takes all the fun out of wrenching!

    • True, hard to say what differences there may or may not be between Chev and GM as well as a production year or mid year part change either.    I just found it odd that under the Sierra choice on the Autel that many of the last few years of production year did not include the choice of changing the tire pressure but if that is an Autel thing or a GM thing as to why the choices were not there. Knowing what tpms sensors are on the truck should give some guidance into which choices on the tool even make sense to try as I wouldn't give up just yet with the tool but I guess he will see what if anything he comes up with if he finds out a bit more info and tries a few more things on the Autel.
    • I'm sure if you went to a junkyard where you go in and pull the part off the truck yourself, not a used part place where they do it for you, you can get that part on it's own.  Depending on if and what else you would be buying, and time of day, they might even just skip over adding it as a item to the bill.
