Just curious what's the coldest temp you northerners have seen on your DICs?

So far on my new truck it's been -3* C. :uhoh:

(Just below freezing for the non-metric folks)

So far in november the coldest I have seen is -37 celcius. It currently is -22 celcius.

I find it amusing when my rear view displays the word "ice". It will pop on intermittenly, but most of the times when it does come on, there is actual ice on the road. Not that it has a sense to detect actual ice, it is simply displaying it when there is freezing temps outside. But it was strange the number of times I just about started driving over ice patches and the word would come on.

during the winter, mine regularly shows OE or OL...can't remember. If temperature goes below -40 then it just gives you an error

so far this year, the lowest I've seen is -34C

-42F couple years ago in Alaska. Im sure it was less than that too with the wind chill. Was on my old truck though with the rear view thermometer. Mine used to just say ice some days too and never actually give a temp.

has anyone actually seen them show below -40? Mine shows -40 but if it gets any colder it just gives me an error. This was on both my 06's (VortecMax and old 2500HD). Maybe the nbs are different?

I belive they are very accurate....i keep a close eye on temperature and my truck always matches the local radio stations as well as various signs around town that show temp.

Does anyone know exactly where GM mounts the thermostats for the thermometer? I'm guessing it is somewhere near front end, behind front bumper? Or possible near radiator? cause everytime I have the plow, my temp readings are way off. It will read summer temps during winter and sometimes the compass gets off and displays wrong direction. I know it is the plow that causes it, something to do with interfering with the magnetic feild of device. I would love to possibly relocate the reader to an area where the plow doesn't upset the readings.

It is mounted on the top edge of the radiator support in front of the radiator near the center of the truck. (On my 07 gmt-900)

I know exactly where you are talking about, I've seen it before. Just wasn't sure that was it. Thinking maybe of relocating it into the bed of the truck, under my mounted tool box. The box is aluminum, so there wont be any interference. Or maybe it would be easier just use another thermometer seeing how it wont require wiring. It's just kinda strange how the plow would interfer with the temp readings. It's not like the plow is 12" in front of it. I can see the air flow being blocked and redirected, but there certainly is plenty of room for air flow with plow on, and I have a hard time seeing the heat being trapped between plow and radiator all the time. It certainly doesn't feel like 90 degrees in the dead of winter while standing in between plow and truck. Muts have something to do with magnetic feilds caused by the plow, and/or the plow frame where pump and lights are mounted to. Cause the grill is plastic, so I have to rule out metal being directly in front of stat.

-34f last winter. Up here frequently gets -20 or colder in the winter.

I put the GM cover over the rad during the winter (it's a diesel), thus it makes the temperature reading useless.

It was reading 2c yesterday on the highway, yet it was closer to -10c.

Thats why I keep putting off installing my winter front...lol.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
