Powered Sub

Hey everyone. Im new to sound systems, havent personally touched out yes as far as install. Im looking at changing the system in my truck, as the head unit decided to stop taking and ejecting cds. I plant on swapping out the head unit, and install a powered sub. I would like to keep the Stock Bose speakers and tweeters. Is this possible to do? And as far as wiring in a powered sub and head unit. The head unit would be a direct plug and play with the correct connector right? I also have steering wheel controls, would like to keep that feature. Wiring in a powered sub, how would i go about doing that? Would i keep the stock bose amp and sub in the center consol? The whole thing has me confused, if you could help me out would be great. I have a 05 Silverado 1500 with the Bose single cd head unit. Thanks a bunch for the help.

If you are going to buy from Crutchfield you are better off asking them these questions. As far as does this setup sound feasible the general answer is yes, but the devil is in the details. One would have to go into the details of the HU to see if it has sub out and the sub would have to be wired separately. That Meta adaptor is to adapt an after market radio to the truck harness not to adapt a separate sub to truck harness.

I suggest you either find someone who has done specifically what you are trying to do or use Crutchfield support if you buy from them. Just my $.02.

I put a Pioneer deh-p5000ub deck in my 04 with Bose, it's pretty simple you just need the right adapters ... I did not get the adapter for the steering wheel controls I just didn't use them that much and didn't want to spend the extra $,I also added a Kenwood amp and 2 JL Audio subs, the system sounds great,I chose the Pioneer for several reason #1. being supurb usb direct Ipod controls #2.3 sets of preamp 4.0 volt outputs which gives me full control of the subs as well as hi pass filter for the Bose and allows me to keep the gain down on my amp

I have also recently installed a stereo system in my ’04. This was the second time, the first aftermarket setup having been stolen from me about a month ago. I did not have the Bose factory system, but it looks like the adapter you picked out will take care of connecting that equipment for you. I did opt for the steering wheel control adapter. As far as I’m concerned, this is a must-have. I went without for a month or so and missed them dearly. I went with the Pioneer DEH-4200UB. This head unit is dirt cheap now, but it has excellent features. Like the one mike has, it has the usb control for the ipod and sounds fantastic. It also has 3 lines of text on the display so for example, you can see artist, track, and album info. You did not mention if you had extended or regular cab. There are some really nice boxes available that fit right under the back seat if you have extended cab. I’ll attach a picture of what I installed.

Once you figure out exactly what you want to get in there, the bigger question is probably, how? Replacing the factory head unit isn’t too tough if you don’t mind pulling your dash apart. You are going to have to pull the trim off that goes around the dash. If you just put a small screwdriver behind the cowling and pry gently, it will start to come out. It’s held in with a number of spring clips. To get the cowl all the way out you have to have the steering wheel all the way down and put the gear selector as far down as it goes too. You still might have to twist it a little. Once that’s out you should have pretty good access to the stereo. Then just follow the directions that Crutchfield sends you (I ordered mine from them and the instructions were decent).

As I mentioned, I didn’t have the Bose system in my truck (I prefer to install my own audio components) but if you already have an amp and sub, are you sure you want to install a new set? Are they not enough for you? Are you trying to add more? Your aftermarket head unit should have some outputs for a sub, so I doubt you will have to do anything with the amp and sub that are in there if you don’t want to.

The other challenge might be running wires to your new amp & sub. Remember to run the power wires and signal wires on opposite sides of the truck. The power wire can cause interference in the signal wires resulting in a very annoying whine that will go up and down in pitch along with your engine rpm. The plastic panels next to your seat, under the doors, come up in much the same fashion as that trim piece on the dash. You should be able to just pull them up by hand. Most of the trim pieces come out this way. Just pull on them and they should come off. You should have plenty of room under these to run your new wires.

I’m sure if you speak with someone at Crutchfield they will tell you this, but don’t forget to get the wiring kit and RCA cables if you are running any kind of amp. I didn’t see them on your shopping list you posted.

Good luck. Post back if you have any other questions. I’m sure some have been left unanswered.
