Tensioner / Idler Pulley Squeak

Recommended Posts

I recall reading on here about someone who was able to disassemble their idler pulley and lube it. Mine makes a squeaking noise on cold start up and I would prefer to do this rather than buying an overpriced new one. Anyone done this yet?

Are you sure it's not the belt? The whole pulley assembly is only $14

You can knock out the bearing and press a new one in.

Belts are fairly new........I can handle $14, but where?

My local parts store. What year and engine are you looking for? For my '04 they range from $8 for the Dorman brand, to $17 for AC Delco

2005 with 4.8 L...................thanks in advance! BTW, I live in San Diego, Ca if that matters as far as a parts dealer goes.

You can look over at rockauto.com. But a local parts place should have what you need. Got a NAPA in your area?

Napa around the corner.

I removed both tensioners and could not hear or feel anything out of the ordinary, the bearing seals are still good and not leaking so I will just keep an ear on it.............86,000 miles, don't know the average lifespan of these...............thanks for your input.

Bearings lifespan on pulley for a 05 HD duramax are 138465 I found out. No indication or noise from them at all. A very high pucker factor when you suddenly have no power steering or brakes while coming onto a off ramp at 75 mph.

I have considered replacing mine. This is THE only thing that I've not liked so far with this truck.. The truck is remarkably quiet with the exception of the chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp* chirp*chirp*.. I will have to make sure that it is what I think it is first though.

I'm going to be replacing my belt and alternator this weekend probably ... I wonder if i should replace the pulley to if its that cheap. I only have 42,000 on it . Main reason i am replacing belt is to get rid of squeek.

Mine is squeaking too. I just bought a new AC belt because it is coming from down low. BUT....... i noticed today that the smaller tensioner on the bottom left jumps a bit. mine only squeaks when it has rained and there is a lot of moisture, but it goes away after 30-45 seconds.... and tensioner still bounces. you guys think its just the belt? or the tensioner?
