Can You Hack The Tape Deck To Make An Aux/ipod Port?

I have a 2001 2500HD with the tape deck in the lower console. It is highly likely that I will never put another tape in it. I'm on a budget so I can't afford any of the usual PAC interface products. It it possible to find a wiring diagram for the wires running to just the tape deck and hack the two wires that actually carry the signal back to the head unit? Then you could run them to a 3.5MM aux port and mount it somewhere in the dash. I'd even be willing to keep an old tape in the player to fake it out to think it's playing a tape. Make sense?

Can this be done and where can I find the wiring diagram?

there is an adapter that goes into the cassette deck that has a 1/8" male stereo jack on it for putting a walkman to the car stereo , you could take the male jack off and put a female one in it place where ever you wanted in the dash. On Amazon use this product # B003Q8U0RM

I'm using one of those cassette tape adapters now. It works okay but I though that if I could bypass the connection through the old tape deck head and wire something in directly it would sound better.
