freind of mine has an 88 f250 2wd 302 in great shape hes gonna just give me. so i was thinking of just running it around for firewood...

how hard would it be to find a 4x4 front diff and transfer case, just curious if its worth messing with. it would be a great beater truck to throw a plow on also, its reg cab long bed automatic

we did a f100 and c15, both about 1985s in the early 1990s. it was about a days for each truck and was a fun project. both of our trucks were carbs, how tough of a job it is depends on how much electronics is on board. i have being toying with a similar conversion, in newfoundland there is a good supply of parts...

i just figured if it was a manual 2hi 4hi 4lo selector and manual locking hubs there wouldnt be much computer/wiring to worry about

If it were me and it was my 2WD snow plow truck, I'd just put a couple of real good Mud/snow tires on the back and throw about 800 lbs of 'stuff' in the bed and leave it alone.

well it wouldn't be easy but not impossible, you would need a 4wd trans/transfer case, a 2wd trans can be modified to fit the transfer case but probably not worth it, the front end on a 2wd is coil sprung where as the 4wd's were leaf sprung, however the holes in the frame for the leaf spring brackets are there, you would need the brackets springs and front axle and all the steering components, i would suggest if doing it to go with the Dana 60 solid axle from a f350 rather than the Dana 50 ttb from a 250. Dana 60's run around 1k-1.5k alone.

 

on top of that the 302 is a dead balls reliable motor but low on power esp in a 3/4 ton trim and not very good millage. personally id throw some weight in the back and some tire chains behind the seat just in case and drive the piss out of it.

Guys here do this all the time, both the F-series trucks and rangers...its literally half the price to buy and convert a 2WD here.

thats what you will need for sure. but the thing is, how much time do you have. i say take it and just put the plow on. it will save you a lot of time, and a lot of swearing.

you need the transmision/transfer case, front axel all the steering componates to match the axel (tie rods drag link pitman arm ect) leaf spring mounts, and leaf springs. the leaf spring mounts will have to have the rivets cut off and you can bolt them in place on the new truck, you will need to put the hole in the floor board for the transfercase shifter, if you choose to modify the transmision to accept the transfer case you will need the new tail shaft and you will have to disasemble the trans and replace the output shaft. you will put probably $3000 into it by the time its done using all junk yard parts, like i mentioned beore a dana 60 typicaly runs over 1000 sometimes you can get lucky and find one compleet hub to hub with the springs and steering componates, plan on rebiulding any used axel before you install it. a t-case will probably run you about $250 $500 for a used trans of questionable quality your best bet is to try to buy a compleet 4wd 350 that has been wrecked dont use a f250 for a donor for a 4wd swap the ttb front axel will be troublesome to mount

 

so really i just need a 4x4 front axle, and matching transfer case??

Not only will you need a front diff/axle assembly and transfer case, but you'll also need the transfer case to tranny adapter and front driveshaft.

Whole front suspension is different actually. Ford 4bys use I beams. They bolt in and the holes should be in the frame for them. What you need is another 4X4 Ford front clip. Its not expensive or hard to do, but it will take you the better part of a weekend to get it pulled apart on both than another weekend to get the 4by stuff in the 2wd. Your likely better off going with the 2wd, knobby tires, weight, and a Detroit locker in your diff, than you can put your parts list together and build it over the summer when you don't need it.

just buy a donor truck with a blown motor or something thats been lightly rolled. Cheapest way to do it and just swap stuff over as time allows.

Yup +1 on that.

Just ensure you buy new bushings etc...all the soft parts should be new.

 

If you were close to me I have a buddy that pretty much sells the entire swap as a kit from wrecked vehicles, and he could install it for pretty cheap.

 

Had a friend install a Dana 60 in a GMT 800 last year too. That worked out awesomely...until it got vandalized. He's been working state side since mid last year so I haven't been talking to him as of late to see if he bought it back from ins company.

 

Oh and for the record Ron...your Yukon looks awesome.

    • This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.  
    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
