Can anyone tell me if this is an OEM shock on my '06 GMC 1500 Z71? The cylinder is red with a black plastic upper cover.

Looks the same as what I have and I can assure you mine are stock... Have a 2006 GMC Sierra Z71 5.3L SLE ext Cab.. Live in Canada but my truck was built in Texas so you know its good...

So...a new set was probably a little overdue when I bought it at 110K last August? :shakehead:

Seriously, it rides very nicely compared to the '94 2500 I was driving, but I notice a few sharp bumps so I thought I'd check the shocks. These old shocks pass the old jump-on-the-bumper test with flying colors, but I think the smaller bumps are getting by them.

I've had good experiences with Ranchos. What is the consensus for the best shocks on these pickups? I won't be doing any serious off-roading.

Al, I didn't know GM made pickups in Texas, I thought they just made SUVs in Arlington.

I've seen these shocks go WELL over 100k easily.

As for replacements? If you can afford them, Bilstein is the only way to go, imo. If price is an issue, I have always been very well impressed with the KYB's.

My front shock was blowing oil at 60 something k. Even the wife said, SOMETHING IS WRONG!!.

My rears were leaking air, and the pump was running too much.

I've seen 100's, no "thinking" to it. :shakehead:

I'm assuming it was made in Texas since it has a sticker on the inside drivers side door that says Arlington, TX.. The sticker is in the shape of Texas..

Looks like the same shock I took off my 02 Silverado at 100k, I figured it was time to change them out, but when I took them off they were just fine. Since I already purchased and received my KYB's from online I just went ahead and installed them. It depends on where you live as to how long your shocks will last.

Back home in Pa with all the pot holes and rail road tracks that suck going over you can wear out a set of shocks faster than like here in NC where the roads are in great shape and now RR tracks to worry about.

They are original and crap. One of mine had a broken shaft in the rear, and my front right's seal was out. 4 Monroe Reflexes worked out perfectly.

Al: So my '06 GMC Xcab 4wd was made in Michigan and sold in Texas, while your '06 GMC Xcab 4wd was made in Texas and sold in Canada? I'll never understand that kind of giant corporate "efficiency."

And yes, of course it's built well if it comes from Texas. (Did you know you were talking to a native Texan?) ;)
