I Need 4x4 Help! I Have Never Had It Before!

Okay, the manual is confusing me and I have never had a 4x4 before, so please bare with me. If I want to shift into 4WDHi or Low do I need to put my regular transmission gear into neutral or just leave it in drive and shift the floor shifter into 4WDHi or lo?

you can push it into 4HI anytime you want, moving, rolling, stopped, anything. to go into 4LO you have to come to a complete stop, put the gear shifter into NEUTRAL and slide the tranfer case into 4LO. and in order to get back out of 4LO you gotta do the same thing, stop, neutral, etc.

You can shift from in and out of 4WD Hi at any speed.

To shift into 4WD Lo the manual recommends that the vehicle be rolling 3-5 MPH, then shift the transmission into neutral, then move the 4WD lever to the Lo position. I've personally never needed 4WD Lo.

that is true, you can be rolling at a very low speed, i just never feel its neccesary

Okay, I understand everything then with 4WDHi, but I'm still a bit confused on one part of 4WDLo. You say to put the regular transmission into neutral and then put the floor shifter into 4WDLo, but then what? Do you just drive, or do you then put the regular transmission back into drive? (I know, probably stupid question, but I want to be sure of what I am doing)

After shifting into 4L the transmission needs to be shifted back into gear as well. If either shifter is in neutral, you won't go anywhere. Also realize that if you leave the transfer case in neutral for any reason, park won't stop the truck from rolling as at that point the t-case has been disconnected from the transmission.

Neutral on the transfer case is only for when your getting towed or pulled with your drive wheels on the ground. This prevent overheating of the transmission and such when the engine is off and no lube is being pumped throughout.

4Lo- shift transmission into N, then at a stop or slight roll, shift transfer case into 4L

4Hi- just slam the b%tch in!

Just one thing. DO NOT PUT IT IN 4WD WHILE ON PAVEMENT.

no you can use 4WD on snow for example and if your going straight, but dont use 4WD on dry pavement as it binds and will drive very weird and is not great for the truck

also remember 4x4 dosen't make you invincible, know your limits....i know so many people that think 4x4 solves everything

yeah, while 4wd will aid in acceleration it does nothing for deceleration... it's not speeding that kills, it's the sudden impact when you hit the wall ;)
