Bedlining Bare Metal

Ive got the bug again. Im gonna build an offroad bumper for my truck. Instaed of painting it, I thought about putting some do-it-yourself bedliner on it. I was thining about U-Pol's Raptor Liner. Has anyone used this before?

 

What should I use on the bumper before lining it? I know the specs say to use etching primer, but Im not a painter, so Im not sure what that is? If I use self-etching primer, do I still have to scuff it?

 

Any input you could give me will be great.

I'd try Herculiner on it, you can pick it up at Advanced Auto i think

I dont like the appearance of Herculiner. Plus, Ide rather spray it on.

Pretty sure you should primer it first....You may not need to though.

I like the new duplicolor bed armor. Stuff is pretty good. I used it on one of those hitch baskets and it worked well.

Personally, I'd sand it good, and use etching primer them spray away.

I know it needs primer. The stuff wont stick to ferrous (iron base) metals. It really doesnt stick to aluminum of fiberglass all that well either. Primer is a must, but do I need to scuff the etching primer or does it have its own rough texture? Im not sure what the etching part means.

Etching primer has an acid component in it so it gets a better "bite" on the metal. It sticks to the metal better, in other words. Or at least that was what the paint rep told us.

 

You still need to scuff it.

 

Personally, I would not use the spray can stuff either...I can recommend Dupont VariPrime. Just use a good respirator when you shoot it.

Yeah, and be sure to wipe it down with a good solvent after to remove all grease (like finger prints) and dust.

 

Basic paint prep techniques should work for bed liner for the most part.

Ill try to remember. Im not good at stopping during a build to take pictures. Im too impatient. . But, I will definately remember to take pictures between spraying primer and liner.

hah i hear you, everytime i say im gonna take pictures on a project i do, i end up saying screw it and just finish what im doing

I did get some good pictures of a build I did on my 01 ZR2 S10. Well, the front bumper anyway. The back bumper went together so quick I forgot to stop and snap some photos.
