on my last truck with a oil burner i added 2 stroke oil in the fuel for lubercation for the injectors and found that i gained 2-3mpg is there any reason why i shouldent try this on my 8.1L my commuting truck 89 toyota pickup threw a rod so im driving the 8.1L every day till i get a new motor for the toyota it would be nice to see a little better millage, im not unhappy with my millage but with fuel prices going up and driving it every day im spending double on gas over the little toyota. on my oil burner i ran 2 stroke oil at 100.1 ratio thinking about trying it on my gas truck.

Put whatever you want in your tank that you think will get you more MPGs. I know people on the internet claim this works, But in practical use by a few people on other forums they got zero difference in their opinion.

 

Here's a thought.... use your 2 cycle oil and add acetone too. After all, the acetone guys probably claim 2-3 mpg also. 4-6 mpg gain right there.

on my diesel truck it really did work, it worked as good as the power service as far as mpg and quieted down the injectors that were not designed to run on ULSD. I'm a little skeptical if it will help much on a gas motor, i tried acetone on another vehicle a long time ago and saw 0 benefit.

DO NOT DO IT! 2 stroke oil will do little more in a gasoline engine other than foul the spark plugs are ruin the catalytic converters. Acetone is even worse, it will attack many plastic components in your fuel system if the concentration is high enough. 8.1L's get poor fuel economy, period. There is no magic fix for that.

I don't believe it. Maybe u got better MPG's on that tank for other factors, temperature, driving conditions, etc...If a magic potion that increased fuel econony to 20 MPG's were available, I'm sure we all would use it. Then we would all be complaining, "why don't our trucks get 32 MPG's instead of 20 MPG"s. The energy in the fuel has to be increased to improve mileage: anotherwards if 0.005 ounces(random number) of fuel makes each piston pop around for a cycle, then a higher energy fuel could do the same job with less fuel, (say .003 ounces) as long as your timing and air/fuel mixture could be adjusted to take advantage of the new fuel.

I will admit, that better lubricants and tighter machining tolerances inside modern engines have probably improved mileage a little bit, but in the long run its the same fuel Mom and Dad used, plus or minus a couple additives.

If anything try a TCW3 rated oil, its ashless and may not be as inclined to leave anything behind and foul plugs etc.

when i ran it in my diesel i used tcw3 ash less outboard oil, it really did work it was on a 96 7.3 power stroke. i ran 1000's of miles with an without and there was always a improvement running it. the motor also ran quieter and smoother when running it. i think it had more to do with the injectors getting the lubrication that they were designed for rather than whats available in the new diesel formulation than anything.

 

i don't think that running it on a gas motor at 100.1 ratio would foul the plugs. my outboard at 40.1 does not foul the plugs unless its idling for hours on end trawling you may have a point about the catalytic converter however.

 

I know the 8.1L's get poor fuel economy i didn't buy it for its fuel economy but now that my economy truck is down and i still got a month or two before the snow is gone to ride my motorcycle, it would be nice to get a couple extra mpg's that's all not looking for a miracle here. i get about 9-10 around town and 12 on the highway id be very impressed with 14. i don't think that's unreasonable as there are some people getting 14 out of there 8.1L's

Only one way to find out. Go for it and report back with actual findings. Not what the average eco says or fudged numbers. For the next two tanks do the actual math for mileage. Miles driven divided by fuel burned. Get an average baselines then do it again with oil in it. Document your findings.

 

Most likely its going to be pretty hard to determine if you actually see any gains as one week of driving will not be anything like the next. This week could be 12 next week could be 10. The longer your experiment the better your results.

 

I can't imagine putting oil in a gas fuel system can be good considering these motors have a hard enough time keeping fuel/air mix right with the crappy gas out there these days.

 

But hey go do it since you are set on it and let us know how it works for you.

Quality 2 stroke oil is not cheap either. A gallon of Penzoil fully synthetic TWC3 is over $25.00 a gallon. Any MPG increase maybe offset by the price of the oil.

 

It has been my observation that the Penzoil in my outboard produces the least amount of smoke than any other brands I have run.

im not dead set on doing it, i will be logging probably 1000+ miles over the next week or so but it will be hard to get solid numbers as ill be towing a empty trailer dropping the trailer driving unloaded then hooking up the trailer loading the trailer ect ect and all the distances are going to be relatively short with the same conditions (200 miles +-) i may go ahead and try it over the next week but because of the varying conditions i wont be able to get a accurate figure on fuel millage.

 

when i ran it in my 7.3L power stroke i used the supertech tcw3 from wal-mart was like 11 bucks a gallon if memory serves there's several times a year that i drive 800-1000 miles a day on 2000+ mile trips where the load is the same for the duration one of these trips would be ideal for tracking millage. my biggest concern right now is the catalytic converter weather or not it will be affected by running 2 stroke oil, maybe i will try it out at 200/1 and see if how it runs and go from there.

well here is what i got today without any additive

 

231 miles 24.4 gallons of gas 9.47mpg towing the entire time but all but 65 miles of it the trailer was empty i ran 75 almost the entire time also had about an hour of idling while loading up the trailer (not to self when you got to load a vehicle on a trailer it might be a good idea to bring the keys to it with you)

 

 

ill be dollying the trailer down at the job site in the morning and running around unloaded for a few days and then the entire return trip will be loaded. i may try a 200/1 mix of 2 stroke on my return trip

Diesels and gas engines are 2 different creatures and even though this can be done on a diesel to help lube the injection pump and some other injection related components, it will plug your cat on this truck. The same parts that benefit from this on a diesel aren't on a gas engine so it's a pointless effort that will result in some expensive repairs.

You will NOT get an increase in mileage. Increase in mileage comes from increased energy in the fuel, and TCW oil contains LESS energy than the gasoline it displaces.
