Rear Backing Plates

well for the past month i have been hearing this noise sounding like a squeak on my 01, had a mechanic buddy look at it and he told me the rear backing plates were rusted out. i then tried to figure out if i could fix it myself, but i learned you have to take the rear axle out. dont have the time to do that, and i know id **** something up. so had a another mechanic do it for 550 installed. also another 110 for 2 new u joints which were also making noise and shot.

so my questions are, is this a common thing for GMT800 trucks? i heard its very common. youd think GM would cover that or something i looked back on records, and my 03 suburban had the backing plates sanded down and painted or something like that at 75,000 miles.. happened to my 01 at 87,000miles. gonna go look at my 03's backing plates later today. a

and then just today im browsing through LMCtruck and noticed this...its at the bottom of the page, the rear disc sheild

Dorman (aftermarket auto part manufacture) makes those shields as two pieces now so you don't have to gut the axle to replace them. Check with your local Auto Value, Car Quest or Napa store. They should be able to get them for you, no problem.
