Transmission Noise

I have a strange 4l60e noise in my 2006 crewcab. Since it was new, there has been a clicking/tapping in first gear and reverse that sounds like ball bearings being dropped on a metal plate. As soon as it shifts into 2nd year, the noise completely disappears. It drives fine and has for the past 71000 miles and shifts great. I don't know if its an issue or not.

Secondly, and possibly more of a concern is a creaking noise it makes in gear right when I start moving. Sometimes when I put the truck in park, there is a single metallic click as the parking pawl engages. The creaking noise sounds like this but sounds like 3 or 4 simultaneously. I can replicate the noise rocking the truck back and forth with the motor off.

I climbed under and had my friend push it back and forth and the sound definitely comes from within the transmission case.

My local mechanics can't seem to determine what the noise is indicative of and I need to know. I drive 200 one way miles back and forth to work several times a week and I don't have any time for downtime, so is this something that is going to create a major issue one day or will it just be an obnoxiously annoying condition that I have to learn to live with.

Thanks

I can hear my u-joints clicking as well on my 06 Crew Cab. I can hear it sometimes when I downshift as well from time to time. Haven't noticed as much since winter, but I'm sure once I start opening the windows again I'll start noticing it more again. Gets very annoying.

Poor weld integrity on the welds holding the rear driveshaft tube to its yoke ends. There was a bulletin out for it. Repalced a ton of them under warranty, back in the day.

Interesting. I brought mine back to the dealer when I bought it and complained about the noise. They said they greased the u-joints and that the noise was normal. I haven't worried about it since.

ChevyTech77 thank you for the example of a good tech versus the usual blind parts replacers who can't diagnose anything the pcm doesn't diagnose for them. I understand swapping driveshafts is easy BUT it takes a good tech to get to the bottom of those things and someone who really cares to remember and share.

I'm curious on how they greased a non-greasable u-joint? Sprayed WD-40 on it?

Thought I would mention this. I had a "similar" sound happening in my 05 sierra. I am not sure everything is the same underneath your truck but it is a cheap part to replace to see if it helps. My noise was coming when ever I would start from a dead stop or come to a complete stop. My mechanic here actually strapped himself under my truck and had his wife drive it to try to find the sound. He thought it was an engine mount. Turned out he was darn near right. It ended up being the transmission mount/anchor that attaches to a cross beam of the frame. This link will show you the part: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=315442. It ended up that the metal portion was rusted and had some dirt and rocks caught up in it and was some how causing the sound. I replaced it in about an hour and it has been quiet ever since. I could not find a crack or break in the part anywhere but when the tranny would torque or move just the right amount it would make a popping noise. Again not sure this is it but it is an easy to replace part and its cheap.

Just checked and it looks like the part on the link I referenced would be the same part for your truck.

Chevytech77 - I never would have known that or even been able to consider that! Very good information for sure. What kind of cost would be involved with that? Mine is out of the bumper to bumper, and my 5 year 100,000 is up. Is that something thats ultimately going to fail leaving me stranded?

Thanks

I've personally never seen one fail, because of this, but in the grand scheme of things, I can see it being possible.

If you have a local welding shop, that is good at welding aluminum, you could try and have them re-weld it and see

if that takes care of it. We were just replacing them while they were under warranty.

Wow. First post in search for "clicking" and I find this. Exactly what my truck is doing, however, mine is brand new. Has only 5k miles on it.

EDIT..it also is a HD, so different tranny. Hmmm. Just caught the forum this is in.

Does it exactly as stated. Only when pulling out from a stop, parked or simply stopped. Sounds like a clicking. I can only hear it when the windows are down, so it isn't all that loud. It may have always done it, but with it being just now warm enough to drive with the windows down (I've only had it since Feb) I'm just now hearing it.

I know it is under warranty, but I'd hate to take the thing in for a "click" and the local dealer here sucks (there is a reason I drove 2 hours to buy it). Anyone with the newer style have it? Same tranny? (still learning the Chevy. I came from a Dodge)

Thanks.
