Will A 4.8l Be Enough?

What is the price difference between similar trucks w/4.8 and 5.3? Perhaps an impossible question given all the combinations out there on all the dealers lots.

the 4.8/4L60E combo was pretty good in half ton trucks until they started only offering the 3.42 gears.

You can still get 3.73 gears. Does not correct the wide spread in ratios though, it helps, but does not fix.

Ive seen pictures of the linkage, but i do believe there is an electric motor inside the transfer case? Not sure, i guess its a mental thing but I'm considering the 4.8 because of no AFM then maybe throw a couple of performance mods to it. I still have another month before I make a decision so I'm going to take my time and consider both options
My '07 has a 5.3l, and it does not have AFM. Can you not get a flex fuel 5.3l only anymore? I have 84,000+ on mine with ZERO PROBLEMS

If your truck isn't an 07 classic, it has AFM, however, it can be disabled.

The floor shift is a manual transfer case, no motor on transfer case. My last truck was a standard cab, 3.73 gears, 4.8 liter sittin on 35's. It did fine pulling a trailer once in a while. I did have the 5 speed manual.

Regardless of how the transfer case is shifted, there is still an electronic actuator on the front diff. So it will not be possible to get away from electronic engagement on a newer vehicle.

I've had a 4.8L and I've towed with it: I wouldn't get a 4.8L 4 speed for that setup. It would do the job, but it won't be the most efficient and you would have to not be in a hurry.

You can get a 5.3L in any trim, you may have to special order. You can try talking to a sales person and see if they can do an inventory search of other dealers and locate what you want.

I don't know about Flex Fuel non-AFM, but I have a 5.3 that is not Flex Fuel that does have AFM

Thanks for all the feedback and support. I think I changed my mind on what to get. I can get a regular cab w/t with the LS package that comes with the 5.3 and 6 speed trans which will be more than enough for my needs

I have seen many 5.3l with the floor shifter, you can get the 5.3l in a work truck, that being said I owned a 4.8l and towed a 5000lb camper with it all the time,it did it fine but the 5.3l I have now towes much better,I think a lot of that has to do with the 6spd tranny as I think there is only about 11 or 12 horsepower between the two engines. As far as the floor shifter vs the dial shifter I have owned both and definatly prefer the dial,it's quieter and also gives you the auto 4x4 function which is awesome on those days when you would be shifting in and out of 4x4 ,just set it and forget it.

The 2010 crewcab 4X4 only came stock with 3.42 gears with teh 4.8L engine and a 4 speed auto. Tow rating of 5500#. The 2wd version came with 3.23s or 3.73s stock with a tow rating of 4700# and 6700# respectively. How heavy are the trailers your planning on pulling?

I have a 2011 4.8 sle ext cab, and I pulled a 23 foot, 4700 # cabin trailer last summer, easy pull. pulled in 3rd, did pretty good on fuel, and on a steep climb, (7*+) it dropped to 65mph, kicked into 2nd, (4000rpm) and held it all the way up. i was impressed, since my 01 cummins would barely do that. (600ft-#'s)

HOWEVER, since then i have put on 285/75,17 wrangler territories, (pretty aggressive) and it really hurt highway performance. Although, because of warantee, I dont want to re-gear. (only 6000 miles)

I should also mention I have electric shift t-case. Works flawless. Worked all hunting season. (and it was a eventful hunting season)

If you get a 4.8 with 3.42's, and want 33's, plan to regear. If you have the option, get 3.73's. Or stick with stock tires.
