Gmt-800 T.s.b. Brake Wear

It seems as if I'm the only one on this forum pushing a GMT-800 anymore, but for those others out there: I've been having problems with the right rear inner brake pad wearing faster than everything else. I knew this TSB was out there back in 2004 but I chose to ignore it. Well, I was bored the other day and said what the heck. I ordered the TSB advised part number which includes these large shields and mounting hardware, as well as good directions. I think the dorkiness factor is still within spec after installing these. They look kind of strange, but if they work they work. I'm hoping this will make my next set of rear pads last longer.

 

Here are some pics. One of them is a view from the front of the rear wheel, showing the protection it provides the brake assembly from flying road debris. The other is a view from inside the wheel well. Notice how it totally blocks the area in front of the wheel. This will hopefully do the trick.

Thats an understatement. Wonder who at gm came up with that.

that looks awful. who at GM came up with that? i havent had any problems on any of my GMT800's with the rear brakes..

i hope this works for you - my 99 and 2003 also wore the right rear inner pads very quickly but the left rear inner pad did not. also my trucks hardly saw any dirt roads.

we used to put these on all our fleet trucks, many of which wouldn;t see pavement from May till September.

 

You can cut about half of the underhanging parts off and they will still be effective, as well as less likely to be torn off and reduce the dork-factor

Substance over style. Ordered / installed mine about 2 yr.s ago after rear pad, rotor self destruct.

They certainly are heavy duty. I agree they don't make much of a fashion statement, but I don't find them that ugly. They should certainly be effective minimizing debris blasting caliper / rotors.

Curious thing, though: Shields are perfectly symmetrical, but apparently my truck is not. One side required a good deal of trimming to fit.

I found the same thing to be the case with my sled. I didn't have to trim, but I had to do a little more work to squeeze them in on one side than the other. After you installed these, did you find them to be effective? You sure are right about the heavy duty part. I couldn't believe how thick they are.

They certainly should be. I notice in Winter the fronts of them are covered with salt / sand / gravel that would otherwise have blown past and sand-blasted whatever's behind them.
