3.08 Gears Question

Currently in a 07 gmt-900 ext. cab, silverado 1500 with the 4.8,4spd trans with 3.42 gears. Only mods are GMPP intake/exhaust. Not pounding on the gas i get between 11-12 mpg in the city. 90% of my driving is city. Looking into a 2011 ext. cab Silverado with the 5.3, 6spd trans and 3.08 gears. I did a search and didn't really find much. Not knowing alot about gears......What will this set up do in city driving? Will i stay about the same or will i dip? Should i look for a different set up? Like 3.42's or 3.73's? Any imput would be great. Thanks, Justin

For city driving a lower gear(numerically higher) will help mpg SLIGHTLY, as it will be easier to move off the line at stop lights. But a 3.08 should be pretty good on the highway.

3.08s are what the equivelent of 3.42s (6 speed vs 4 speed)

the 4.8/4.3 are pigs on gas from my experience when they are mated to the 4 speed trans...

I have a '11 CC with 3.08 and without pounding on the gas in the city I'm getting 13-14 and highway anywhere from 17-20

the 4.8 is about the same as 5.3, its the 4.3 thats a pig.

I got a 5.3L/3.73/4sp and I regularly get between 14-16 mpg avg. I have seen 19.8 mpg highway, and 11 running it hard & fast on E85.

I thought I read somewhere on the forum some complaining of the performance of the 6 speed/3.08 combo....I know you want to save on gas, but wouldn't also be a little concerned about performance ??...JMO

I ended up not getting the truck. They tried low balling me so i'm dealing with another dealer now and alot of their trucks are the 5.3/6spd with 3.73 gears and 3.42 gears.

No 5.3L 6-speed came with 3.73's unless you got the 6.2L and NHT max trailer package, so the truck would have 3.42's

My bad, Thought i had seen it on one of the trucks i was looking at or maybe it did have the 6.2 and i might not have noticed that. Justin

No issues with performance. It's a nice combo, but I wouldn't mind a little lower set of rears when on the highway and there is a wind.
