...post in Light Duty?!?!?!?  Magically disappeared.  I saw it had one response but never got a chance to read it..... anyway... was asking about the quality of bug and wind deflectors from GTS vs Lund vs others.  Any comments?  Want a low profile bug deflector.  Also asked about the idea of painting a bug deflector to match my Summit White paint.  Haven't seen any white trucks with matching bug deflector.  Also thinking about painting side window deflectors to match also. Good idea or bad?  I am unsure about how they would look.  One last one.... is painting these items hard to do?  Could use my Wagner spray gun or would buying color matched spary paint be good enough.  Anyone painted there own?  Sorry to ask all the questions in one post.

I'm not sure NewbieZ71...  I gave you one heck of a responce too!!!  If it can't be found and replaced then I'll try and rewrite what I said....

Now prob. Zane, small price to pay wouldnt you say? Thanks Shaners, any comments appreciated.  Think I've kinda decided against painting the window shaders, think it might look funny and it would cut out all light.  Still cant find any pictures of a truck with them painted.  That should tell me something in itself.  Can I get color matched spray paint at the dealer or AP place?  Have had a problem finding touchup in Summit White.

NewbieZ71,

A friend of mine has a white 2000 Dodge Ram Sport and he painted his bug shield white.  Actually he had a paint shop do.  It looked very nice.  He got some clear headlight covers that he used when driving around in the daytime and he had them painted white also.  He removed the bugshield thought because it started cracking.  The paint wasn't cracking, just the bug shield itself.

If you paint it remember to paint it on the "inside".  That way it'll not be chipped by stones....

My "long" response had to deal with the VentShades for the windows....   The big problem I see Is that you will have what appears to be a "black" pinstripe because the moldings will be visible if you buy the ventshades that fit inside the window track...  If you buy the ones that adhere with "sticky tape" (like mine) then you would have to have the tape removed and then painted and then new tape applied before the installation...  does that make sense???

Thanks guys, Shaners-what type fit of shades fit in the tracks of the windows?

Tom- did your friend paint from the inside or did he paint the whole headlight cover and bugshield? The headlight covers look nice and in the picture at least seem to match perfectly..  am having a hard time finding clear bugshield locally (I hate ordering online/delivery by mail  I WANT IT NOW SYNDROM which is why my sale guy had to deliver my new truck at 4:30pm on the last work day before Christmas in the middle of his dealership Christmas party!!)

He had both items painted from the inside.  I think he had the shop match the paint using the paint code of his truck so there would be any noticable difference.  I'll see If he has any pics of it with the bug shield installed and post them if he does.  I think he still has the small pieces on the fenders still installed while he looks for a replacement for the hood.  If so, I'll snap a picture at work so you can get somewhat of an idea how it would look.  From what i remember, he had a hard time finding a clear one also.  I think he had to have it ordered from a local parts store.

I for the life of me can't remember what type of window shades those are...  But I do know they "aren't" the Auto Vent Shades!!!   Because that is what I have!!!

I saw them doing a segment on ShadeTree Mechanic...  (now Crank and Chrome), on TNN where they installed alot of those after market things on a new Silverado...  They maybe GPS but I can't remember for sure...

Havent run across any that are like you are talking about.  Anybody ever painted the bug deflector and shades to match the lower color on a two tone paint job?  Yet another of my ideas that sounds great in theory...reality though....hmmmm..... I better watch what I do and not get too crazy or I will be posting the pictures on MexicanBus.com.    Just trying to make her look nice.......

I've seen trucks that have the two-tone flip thing!!!   I think it is a little distracting!!!  I personally like the smoke, but the color matched shields are nice because they are almost invisible.

The worst 2-tone flip was a truck I saw that the cap matched the lowers...   that thing was butt-ugly!!!

If I get a chance I'll research the window vent shades for you and find the ones that stick inside the channnel.

Shaners, think I found at least one kind - WeatherTech WeatherFlectors.  Says they go in the channel, no exterior tape. Also found another type of shades that come in Summit/Olympic white at Pep Boys.  Just for the front windows though, no rear sides.  Think I should maybe go with the all white look for everything like the pic Tom put up. Its way too easy to get out of control with this stuff and end up looking stupid.

If you really want to make your truck look cool, then don't put the shades on the rear quarter windows (they stick out at the back to make room for the window to open), but buy some louvers for the side windows and paint them to match!!!  I've seen them before and they look sweet!!!  I think Lund and GTS both make them in different styles.  The louvers combined with the vent shades on the front windows makes a very nice combo (especially if they are all color matched)!!!

first link is GTS and the second one is Lund.

The GTS Ventgards snap right into the channel on the window.  I believe the louvers are held on with sticky tape.

Cant believe you guys told me this!.....before I read these posts I went to my local AP store to buy some shades...got the 4 piece set, came home, put them on and immediately took the back ones off.  Didnt look right at all.  I thought maybe the louvers would look nice. Went back to get the louvers and somehow managed to leave with them, a Bugflector II,  color matched paint, clear coat, sand paper, extra 3M tape and SURPRISE a set of Westin nerfs.  Tried the shades and louvers (temporarily) and kinda like the black look after all.  Kinda trims it out nice.  I may take the paint back but not sure.  I'm fairly adequate with a paint sprayer so I may try but I really think I like the smoke/black.  What if I just did the louvers in white everything else in black?  I assume I can take them off and paint later if I want.  They come off without too much problem?  I got the black powder coat nerfs because it seemed they would match better especially if I kept the black.smoke.  I havent even THOUGHT about how to put them on.  Its all your fault.  At least thats what I told the wife.  I was totally innocent.  Didnt someone around here have some pics of a Westin install online?

    • I am sure that was quite the pass experience and not a great place to experience during the winter when the conditions are not good. I've seen video of that pass and also more detailed information and pictures about the wrecks at that one hair pin turn where tractor trailers have flown right off the cliff and I am sure from all the warning signs that you know the exact curve that was !. After all there is a reason why a song was made about Wolf Creek Pass !. By the way and I didn't realize this either when I bought my truck as its nothing I even thought of that would be programmed into the cruise control and this occurs in either the basic or the more advanced cruise that controls your distance behind a vehicle and that is the brakes going down a hill are being applied as soon as the vehicle goes a certain speed over the set cruise speed. While it certainly does force downshifts in the transmission as you found out with cruise on while going down hill, its also dragging the brakes as needed to keep the speed controlled to what the cruise was set to. For me, I find that unsettling simply because I have no concept then as to how MUCH brake input is being used a and just how hot are those brakes getting and the wear factor as well. I can see that system getting a person into trouble on long mountain grades while pulling a trailer as it would not only be standing on the brakes of the pickup without any driver input, it would also be automatically applying the trailer brakes and it could cause a run away unit by overheating the brakes. Its one thing on a shorter hill and if the driver allows it to do its thing but on a long mountain grade is where things could get so out of hand. As someone a while back on this forum said, they had someone following them at night I believe on a down grade and had the cruise set and the person behind them could see the brake lights being energized all the way down the hill. I figured when I saw your comment that you didn't know and would have no way of knowing that your truck was applying the brakes and that you would and rightfully so assume you only used the brakes when you pressed on the pedal to slow down more than the cruise set speed for the slower sharp curves. So its good knowledge to know this about the newer GM trucks, certainly when doing any descending on long mountain grades. In the future try kicking off the cruise and use the the manual mode on a pass to see what that is like as I know myself when I first experienced it I thought no way can this engine be holding me back this well and tried the same hill in manual mode and sure enough the engine was revving way up and still could not hold the trucks speed down like it could in cruise mode.    Fuel mileage, that is where a really low sleek type of car can do better at higher speeds, certainly it starts sucking fuel too but a tall pickup is pushing massive amounts of air and also allowing a lot more air under it and the tow mirrors as in elephant ears pushing through the wind  as well. Driving like grandpa is about as good as one can do when driving one of these if trying to get the best fuel economy they can. I bet these trucks would get the best mileage they can if driven on a freeway in Florida if not busy traffic at a sedate speed and that sea level elevation without hills, vastly different then Colorado !.
