GM To Close Two US Pickup Plants For Two Weeks.

The AP (6/22, Krishner) reports, "General Motors Co. plans to close two US pickup truck plants for two weeks in July at a time when pickup sales are starting to wane and trucks are stacking up on dealer lots." The automaker "said the shutdowns at the Flint, Michigan, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, factories have been scheduled for months to do maintenance on equipment and help to outfit the Flint plant for a third shift that's coming in August." While company officials had no "comment on the growing pickup inventory," some experts said the two were clearly related. IHA Automotive analyst Aaron Bragman added, "It's the right thing to do, and it's what they should have done for years, adjusting production to meet demand."

Not sure about these days, but back 10-35 years they used to close first 2 weeks in July in Oshawa and at the old van plant in Scarborough for re-tooling. But they did not just stop all the time. Sometimes they stopped over a couple of days to clear the lines out. Guys in chassis would be off before guys in trim. If they do not do this gradual stop, then the 2011 may still be coming off the line for the first couple of days back. In some places they may have actually started the 2012 build already.

Yeah, some years they just had a rolling model change. There would be a gap in the line between the last of the old MY trucks & new MY trucks. Sometimes the change would be before the shutdown & sometimes after. The last few years of production we had interchangeable tooling that could build current & future models @ the same time on weekends for pilot work.

‘Dated’ Product

GM’s challenge will be staying competitive in the segment with “dated” product and may need to start “juicing incentives” in the third quarter, said Ballew, who had been a chief sales analyst at GM before its bankruptcy.

GM’s current lineup of pickups hasn’t been updated since the 2006 model year. Johnson said the company increased truck production earlier this year in part to account for when plants are idled in 2012 to convert for output of next-generation trucks, declining to give specifics on the timing of shutdowns.

I didn't know the GMT 900s were that old.

Overall maybe. But the 1500s have had gradual improvements over the years with newer engines, the 6 speed, minor option changes and the HDs are just about a brand new truck in an old body. The fact that combined GMC and Chevy sales still put them into a strong #2 position means that the age of the trucks is a non-issue.

Chevy could never have beaten Ford by itself because then Ford couldn't claim top selling truck status, something they've had since before I was born. It held on to top selling US vehicle up till like 08 I think. GM sales fell lower than Ford in '08 when things started to crumble. With your logic why has Dodge even bothered to keep going, being a consistent 3rd place finisher? That is what stands out to me- YTD sales between GM and Ford are separated by like 20k units, Dodge is over 100k lower than that. The fact that GM has essentially the oldest offering (from a visibility standpoint at least) and is just barely behind Ford says a lot to me.

Since the 1970s, GMC and Chevy combined have outsold Ford. I think the only time that changed was a year or two ago. GM vs Ford = GM wins. PERIOD.

GM plants always shut down for 2 weeks in July. Rarely have they remained open for those 2 weeks.

Moday August 15th is when the trucks are supposed to start rolling out at 2012 models, so this Friday will likely be the last day for the 2011 pickups. Some GMC models are already at the local dealer, Terrain and Acadia but No trucks.

FT&B can't get enough parts to build the remaining '11's let alone start running the '12's down the line. This is what I was told in person, from a very reputable FT&B source as of this past Tuesday night. There isn't enough difference from '11 to '12 anyway so the 2 week shutdown was voluntary not mandatory this year for plants like FT&B. I am sure FTW is having the same issues.

Main difference is the leather seat upgrade. A small step in the right direction as the life of the GMT-900 comes to a close.

Which may be what's holding things up at the plant considering that the seats are assembled by the supplier not the assembly line.

I have been waiting for a new GMC Sierra since the later part of June. It has gone from a 11 to a 12 to having a TPW to not to now have a TPW of 10-24.

I am beyond frustrated here and get NO real answers from anybody at GM.

Don't know if this is affecting you situation but a friend who is a asst sales manager at a big local dealer told me the 2010 GMC trucks are trickling in and he said its because the system is flooded with 2011 trucks. Many dealers are loaded up with 2011 trucks, they have nearly 40 when at this time last year had one 1. He said they have over 25 new trucks for stock on order but only 1 of each type has been built, 1 ec, 1 reg cab and 1 cc. They rest don't have TPW as of last Monday when I spoke to him. I have a 2012 on order for 4 wks and no TPW yet but I am not in any hurry and might not take it, I have an opt out if no 0% interest available when truck comes in.
