"HD"? diff between 1500HD and 2500

confused, maybe someone can shed some light. went down to the local dealer and seen no 2500's! all they had was a lot full of 1500HD. i know HD means heavy duty, but what do you get with the HD? bigger springs...what? also, whats the difference between the 1500, 1500hd, 2500hd and regular 2500? in looking at the price, wouldnt it make more sense to get a 2500 or 2500hd over the 1500hd? im THINKING about upgrading in a few years. thanks

GVW between the 1500HD and the standard (non-HD) 2500 is the same.  The main difference between the two is the cab configuration.  The 1500HD is only available in the crewcab model, while the 2500 is not available as a crewcab.

 

The 2500HD has a higher GVW and some beefier driveline parts (I think) over the other two trucks.

GVW on 1500HD is 8,600lbs,,GVW on 2500HD is 9,200lbs....6.0 is the only engine available on the 1500HD.It shouldn't be called a 1500HD,should be called a 2500 because thats what it is.......Gun

gun i think thats what confuses me. your right the 1500hd should be called a 2500 because of its capabilities. now i found this in an old 01 guide i have. 2500hd 6.0l,w 4.10 gears4x4 max tow of 10,300. the regular 2500 max tow w 4.10 is also 10,300lbs!!! but i think the difference is gvw which i cant find. i do see that you can get a bigger engine with the 2500. but im not sold on hd yet. however i think i found something, HD:massive chassis, multisectional frame, two stage multi leaf springs,  hydroboost anti lock?, 8 bolt steel wheels, twin tube shocks?. so i think i solved my own question.

 

basically the 1500 and 2500 have the same chassis the difference is some suspension components and you can get a bigger engine with 2500, more power but same max towing.

 

the HD is a completely different truck...bigger chassis, sophisicated brakes, and overall stronger suspension parts. see, its not the engine...its the chassis and frame! also the spring and axle capabilities are double that of the 1500/2500.

Yes the 2500HD has A Bigger frame.The max payload of a 4X4 1500HD is 2783 lbs.The max payload of a 4X4 2500HD crew cab SB is 3421 lbs. or 3144lbs for the long bed 2500HD 4X4.The capabilities are not even close to being double.The 2500HD is rated for 638lbs more payload the the 1500HD.The towing depends on what engine and gears.My 1500HD is rated for 10,000lbs.

Here here...the 1500HD are some bad rigs...I saw one down at Thornhill Drag strip pulling a 30' enclosed car carried with a First Gen. Camaro, Four Wheeler, Golf Car and Tools in the back.  The HD pulled it like a champ just as good as a 2500HD with a 6.0L and an automatic..but that's just my opinion.

This subject has been debated before, but in a nutshell, the 1500HD is a 2500 Crew Cab. You get the same axles, 4L80 tranny, brakes, 8 lug wheels and towing capacities. Also get choice of gears (3.73 or 4.10) and comes with push button 4WD. Payload is a lot more than a regular 1500 but less than the 2500HD. I bought mine for the crew cab, 3.73 gears and the 6.0L motor. This is one bad a$$ family truck and rides a lot better than my earlier 3/4 ton trucks from the 70s and 80s.

You are right!!!  Is a great all around truck and gives you the option for the 3.73 gears.  In the 4x4 model it is available with autotrac where-as the 2500HD crewcab is not.  This leads me to assume that there may be a beefier transfer case under the 2500HD but I'm not positive.

 

Both trucks are designed to "HAUL" whether it be trailers or people or both.

I can make it simple for you based on comparison with Ford and Dodge's pickup :

 

1500 series are "1/2 tons"

 

1500HD & 2500 models are "3/4 tons"

 

2500HD series are single rear wheel "1 tons"

 

and of course

 

3500s are dual rear-wheel "1 tons"

 

If you pour over the tow ratings, cargo capacities, GVWRs and CGWRs you'll find that it all works out pretty closely.  GM has just blurred the lines for marketing purposes.  That I don't mind so much;  the only marketing problem as I see it is the lack of engine choices for GM's 3/4 ton segment (eg 2500 and 1500HD).  

 

If you get one of these two GM trucks you're stuck with a 6.0L whether you like it of not. The other two brands offer diesels and at least 2 other gas engines for their 3/4 tons (Ram 2500 and Ford F250SD).

 

Case in point-why not offer the 2500 and 1500HD with the Duramax and 8.1L??  ???
