Humming Noise

I just posted in the new member introductions so this is my first "problem"or help" post. I have a 2002 2500HD 4x4 crew cab with the 6.0. I have115,000 miles on it. I have been hearing and feeling a humming noise coming from the front and some slight vibration in the steering wheel. I thought itwas the 48,000 mile BFG AT's I had on there. Well, they were dead and I need astate inspection so I got new tires yesterday. I have 285-75-16 BFG's, brandnew put on yesterday. When I left the shop and got on the highway wouldn't youknow it was doing the same damn thing!

I have kind of narrowed it down in hopes that somebody might know from this description. It really doesn't make the noise or vibrate when going under 35mph. It really does it noticeably at 50 mph and worse at higher mph. It sounds kind of like riding on mud tires or driving on pavement with the 4x4 engaged. To me, it sounds like its coming from the front driver side. HOWEVER.......if Igo into a slight curve in the road to the RIGHT or take an exit ramp that wraps around to the RIGHT, the noise and vibration stops. Quiet and smooth as glass.

I know with AT tires you will get some noise and bump compared to street tires. However, I've had 3 sets of BFG AT's and before when they were old and bald, new ones would make the truck smooth and quite.

I have researched this all day and think it might be a bearing. I'm thinking it is the front passenger wheel due to the fact when I steer to the right (into it) the noise and vibration stops. Any opinions on this or you think its something different?

You might get an idea on parts from rockauto.com or gmpartsdirect.com or other. Are you doing the work yourself or taking it somewhere?

Hey man I appreciate it. I saw your other post in my introduction. I remember your screen name from over there. Got rid of the lifted Silverado?

Damn, figures something else needs replacing. Just put 4 new tires on, plugs and wires.

I can't find the hub on NAPA's site. They have a few bearings that are like 17-24 dollars

and then they have the entire hub assembly which I don't need. You type in hub, bearings etc and I can't seem to find the right part. I guess I could call.....

Anyways, thanks.

On your truck its a complete hub/bearing assembly. The bearings themselves aren't replaceable. They're non-serviceable sealed units.

And yeah man, i traded in the Silverado years ago when i got a sick deal on a Sierra Denali. Then, this past winter I ended up selling the Denali to eliminate the payment because I'll have 2 kids in daycare come January... picked up a cheaper daily driver for the wife that cut our monthly payments in less than half.

Oh yeah now I remember, you did get that Denali. Man too bad you had to get rid of that beauty but I know what having kids is like. Sacrifice! Oh well, at least you still have a 4x4 and I see you have a lift and tires/wheels on it. Better then driving a car! :)

I checked the NAPA site, i believe this is the right part for your truck: Part Number: BRG BR930626

No $hit! man, I saw this yesterday and thought you could just get a new bearing to put inside of it. Damn it! What happened to the days of bearing only replacement or repacking with grease? Well, guess that drains all the money I had saved up from doing landscaping jobs over the past few years. Just spent $1500 2 days ago on tires, plugs, wires, inspection oil change.

Guess I can't complain though. Its been paid off for a year and a half. The only thing Ive replaced in 8 years is the battery and tires.

So the part is $294 at Napa and the shop said they will do it for $70. An alignment was never mentioned being needed. Above, Matt put doen a price for an alignment. My question is; do you need an alignment after repalcing the hub assembly?

Also, does that seem like a decent price for the part and labor?

You don't need an alignment. It has nothing to do with tie rod ends, caster, or camber adjustments. $70 is robbery. You can do it yourself in about 30 mins. Remove the wheel, caliper, rotor, hub dust cover and axle nut. Unplug the wheel speed sensor, and there are 4 bolts on the inside of the hub, behind the dust shield. You'll need a 38 mm socket for the axle nut. I literally had it torn down in 10 minutes with a rattle gun.
