New Wheels

I watched my new Weld Stone Crusher rims/BFG tires being mounted this afternoon and noticed tonight when reading the Weld instructions that the brake retension circlips were supposed to be removed. I am leaving on a trip tomorrow morning (early) and am wondering how important this is? Can I wait til I get home next week or is it something I should get done ASAP? Anybody have experience with this?

I can't answer your question but I wanted to make sure that you know it takes aluminum rims a while to seat in. You need to retorque your lugnuts every 25 miles or so until they seat in. When I mounted my Eagle 589's on my Screw, we drove to to the beach the next day. I stopped every 25 miles and checked the lugs. They were loose every time! They did this for about 100 miles. It's not unusual to hear of a new rim comming off a vehicle because the owner never rechecked the lugs after having them installed. The Welds are a forged rim and may not be as bad, but I would carry a torque wrench with me and check them every 25 miles or so.

Just a note.....I purchased those same wheels and tires...Love them and boy do they look great.....I didnt receive anything from Weld stating this....I would be curious if you really do have to remove something from the truck....My wheels are 16X8 and have not had any problems with anything....Please keep me posted.....Thanks, Joe

What they are asking you to do is easy, remove the wheels, on one of the wheel studs, you will find a star shaped kinda locking deal. (if you still have the factory brakes) All that is used for is during assembly, it holds the drums/rotors on so they dont fall off. Im guessing they want then off so the wheel fits perfectly flush. There is one on each corner. I just use a pair on side cutters, and cut them off.

Never had problems with the lugs loosening due to the wheel seating. When I had new AR wheels put on, they said to recheck them after 75 miles. I checked them and they were all tight. Would check them at least once though.

I called Weld Racing yesterday as I am in KC for the weekend anyway. Explained the situation and they recommended getting the circlips removed ASAP. They referred me to a local tire shop who removed them this morning. You could see where the circlips had imprinted the mounting surface of the wheel. Evidently the factory PYO's have recessed area around each bolt hole to account for the circlips whereas the Weld's do not.

The good news is that they are now correctly mounted and I had the BFG lettering turned in which looks better IMO.
