When To Change Plugs And Wires?

Recommended Posts

Have a 2006 Sierra 5.3L Z71 with 74,000km on it and was wondering when I should change my plugs and wires? The plugs and wires are the original set from the factory. The truck is running just fine and I have heard the original plugs are good till 100,000km. Is this true? Or should I change them now? I have a couple long road trips coming up and just wanted to be sure of when you guys think they should be changed??? I appreciate any and ALL replies.. Thank you for responding with your wisdom..

I've changed out two sets of plugs. One from my truck and from an 05 Suburban with the 5.3 which had 155k on the original plugs. Mine were at 74k like you and they where still gapped at factory specs and looked good. I like you wanted to change them since I was going on a cross country trip. Really didn't need to. The Suburban's plugs looked good but had a wider gap than factory specs. As for plug wires. I still have the factory on mine. No problems. Will not change them out until I have to. The suburban had the factory wires as well and it ran fine before the plug change and after.

Bottom line, you can wait until 100k on the plugs, the wires I wouldn't mess with.
