New Gears For 35''s On 5.3

hey guys. i got a 2002 5.3 sierra. it has 33''s. LT headers and dual exhaust. Diablew custom tune. in the thick mud i struggle spinning the tires. and i hopefully will be up grading to 35''s soon. i talked to a local performance shop questioning him about a low end cam. but he pointed me towards gears. so i have been reading up. Now i fiqured out that most people recommend the 4.56's or the 4.88's. both have arguements why which one is better. my daily communte is about 3 miles highway and about 6 minutes of city driving. But i do tow and make highway trips often.

What would my mileage look like in town and the highway with both gears.

and would i beable to spin 35 / 12.5 tires in the mud and snow with either gears.

Thanks for any help in advance.

P.s i have 3.73 gears and i heard the higher gears will save my tranny with the bigger tires

The 4.56's will be better all around, but the 4.88's will give you the grunt your looking for and may even give you better mileage intown than the 4.56's. If it was me, I'd go for the 4.88's

I've got an 08 5.3 with 4.88 gears and I can spin my 35's on the street so mud should not be a problem

Been there/ Done that

4.88s hands down

And FYI- i commuted 70 miles per day! (Got better gas mileage on the highway with my 4.88s/35s than i did with my stock 4.10s/35s)

thanks for the help guys. what would the top speed be on the 4.88's i heard a guy with a similar truck with 4.88's and 35''s or 37''s ( i can't reme, ber which one. ) can barely break 70 mph. i am not looking to race anyone. but i do want the speed if i would ever need it. If my truck runs at 1500 rpm at 60 mpg. what would the rpms run at 60mpg with 4.88's.

If he can't hit 70 then either somethings wrong with his truck or he's just dumb enough to manually put it in 1st gear instead of 'D'

My cruising speed was 70-75 for my commute and the truck had no problem there. I dont know what top speed was... never tested it. You can easily cruise in the 80s though...

Yeah I cruise at 80 easy on the interstate/freeway/highway whatever yall call it

Never tried top speed and not planning on it either

Agreed. Op, I have 88's and I run a little less than 2000 rpms at 60.

i got a 4.8l with 35s what gears do yall think i should get? also whats the estimated instalation cost or would i beable to do it my self?

Same... 4.88's

And.. installation for a 2wd is about $500-600 and for a 4wd it's about $1300-$1500 and that includes the gears, master rebuild kit and labor. Also.. I'd leave it to the pro's. Alot can go wrong and it's worth letting a shop do it.

I bet someone at the jeep dealership there will install them.... should ask the service manager at work.

you got trouble spinning 33's with headers and a tune?i can spin em all day in 2wd and 4hi in mud?

If i can get them going from a stop i am usually fine but if i can't i have to put it in 4 low. and slowly get them spinning. they are nitto mud grapplers.

what are your rough mpg's with the 4.88's and 35''s. i like to see numbers.
