If your running Flowmaster, Thats your mileage issue. I had sucky mileage when I had flowmaster dual exhaust... and when I changed it to Magnaflow dual cat back I picked up mileage. The flowmaster for me had to little back pressure causing me to loose low end torque causing poor mileage.

completely off topic but you peaked my interest. i ran true dual straights with no muffler because a few friends told me that was the best for mileage/hp... are you sayin they had it backwards? im confused...

True duals with no muflers is great.....if you're trying to make a drag truck, but a normal DD needs some back pressure. True dual straights will actually lose you some drive-ability and mileage. I run dual flow 40s and average 14-15 mpg, and if anything magnaflows flow MORE than flows not less.

Do you mean true duals are better for gas mileage? Cause i dont have "true Duals" i have 2 pipes running from the motor then combinding into 1 then the cat then splits back to 2 tail pipes.

I was also recommended hypertech for a programmer. anythoughts?

Also, any thoughts on sprectre CAI?

Ive talked to a few people, im considering going to a pipe shop tomorrow and seeing how much it would cost me to redo my current exhaust to make it "true duals". Im thinking that and maybe a CAI will help. Ive read about spectre and for the price i dont think i can beat it.. Hopefully those 2 things will help MPG's a smidge.

It would be nice to hear from someone who has tried more than one set up. I had a local shop put on a catback dual setup, no name brand known. Single muffler that looks like a glasspack, with a y pipe coming out backside to two exhaust pipes. My 2002 has two catalytic converters, one on each downpipe off the manifolds that merge into the y section. They are built in, not your typical remove and replace type. I felt like experimenting looking for louder sound. I thought about getting someone to take out the cats and weld in replacement pipe. I thought about buying headers. I have currently just taken the muffler out and replaced it with flex pipe, all do it myself stuff. It still doesn't seem that loud to me. I can tell you this, when I took the muffler out and before I replaced it, leaving a single large pipe exhaust under the truck, it felt like it had no power and just alot of drone noise. It definitely feels better with the exhaust reduced into the two exhaust sections that are 2.25" tailpipes. Not sure what I want to do from here. It may be a little louder but not much. I really want louder and deeper tone but I am not willing to spend much money to increase sound, performance is not an issue of pursuit for me. I don't have any exhaust tips, would 2.25" to 3"-4" tips help make the output sound deeper?

Ken, what gears do you have?

I was getting 11-12 MPG (town & highway) with my 05 5.3L 4.10 gears 6" lift and 35" tires. Gas mileage, performance and all around driveability went up when i re-geared. Was getting a solid 14 MPG after putting in 4.88s.

Also, the tires actual diameter (some run really small like the BFGs), tread pattern, and how YOU drive will have a greater effect on mileage. So for my combination, I saw a solid 2-3 MPG improvement from regearing.

I want to say I have 4.10 gears. 325/65/18 nitto terra a/t tires. They quoted me 300 for true duals at mu local shop. Is it worth it? Also. The spectre CAI yes no?

I just bought the truck so I have no idea if they re geared it before I bought it. At 65-70mph its 2k rpms does that sound like 4.10?

Also.. how much does re gearing cost? Is it worth regearin?

My brother in law says edge programmer is the way to go. He has tried them all.. he recommends edge. Any one tried edge programmer? Im Prolly going to wait on the CAI n not do the exhaust because gains won't be worth the price of true duals... 500 bucks for programmer, saving 3-5 mpgs 20+ hp sounds like it'll be the best option

Keep dreaming. You will never see those type of MPG returns from a tuner. Custom tune > Edge.

He says a custom tune is better for trucks with more custom parts or rebuilt motors (cams etc) that demand "custom" tune.. This trucks motor is stock.. Hes tried all the brand name tuners and he said for a stock gasser like mine edge is what i should try. MY local guy said a custom tune would be better, idk who to believe or what to do... So confused!.

Really considering the CAI from Spectre.. Any reviews on that?

I dont think 12 mpg is real out of the ordinary for a truck with 35's on it depending on how you drive and where you drive. If mileage is a big concern you are driving the wrong rig lol. I just got my GMC but with the 5.3L, 4:10's, catback exhaust, CAI, and 285/70-17's I am averaging around 12 on my route back and forth to work (its only one and a half miles and is stop and go....). I dont think any mods will really pencil out to save you money in the end on gas. I would do the mods for other reasons and if you get a mileage increase that is a bonus! I got the same mileage in my 5.7L Tundra as I am in the GMC (in town), none of these full size trucks are built for mileage...
