I Want To Add A Backup Camera To 2010 Bose Nav Unit

Hi All,

I have spent the morning reading all the posts on there on this subject and I am a little confused.

I have a 2010 Sierra SLT with the Bose Nav unit and I want to add a backup camera.

My question is, do I need a lockpick? I dont care about accessing my Nav while driving and I do not have DVD so no need to watch movies while I drive, all I want to do is add a backup camera.

From what I think I have read, the only thing the lockpick adds for backup camera is a wiring harness, right?

BTW, I have this YE9 option but I think thats is for adding the camera to the rearview mirror? I really want to use the Nav screen if I can.

So my questions are:

1. Can I just buy a camera and hook it up to my Nav unit with no other hardware?

2. I believe I will need to have the Nav unit re-programmed at the dealer to add the backup camera functionality, right?

There is a kit that's made for this install (we sell it) that includes the factory Panasonic camera in a factory bezel with a factory harness and an adaptor that plugs and plays on the factory navi. You will definitely need to get it programmed by your local GM dealer to accept the camera input though.

Try and find a dealer that's done it before though - some make a big deal out of it and make you think it's brain surgery to reprogram the deck. Some are cool and charge you only for the 15 minutes it really takes to do it (or you can suggest that they throw it in with the next service that you'll do at their dealership...)

i agree with Walt, you'll need it reprogrammed but don't fall for the service rep's BS on how long it takes to reprogram. call them first for a quote, when they give you that quote ask them if that is a standard price for the reprogram or if it is on a time basis. see if they will discount it if you have other services done, or if you want them to install the camera also. you shouldn't have to pay more than $50 for the programming!

Here's the OE tailgate camera kit that we use (this shows the universal version, but the OE navi version terminates the gray/blue and gray/red in pins that insert into the factory plug):

The kit requires you to remove the tailgate and drill a 29mm hole in the tailgate AND the bed (you could use the existing large hole in the bed, but it's got a rolled edge and will not grip the supplied grommet). It comes with paper templates and factory-style instructions - (honestly, they're a little more in-depth than I need, but if it's your first time, they're VERY thorough...)

So just to be clear. Is this all I need? I would not need a lockpick?

I have Nav but I do not have DVD.

I know that I would also need to have the Nav unit re-programmed to turn on the camera option.

Mark,

This is all you need if all you want to do is add the camera to function as it does from the factory (reverse only operation).

A Lockpick or similar item (we have a few that do this) allows you to override the navi, watch DVD or turn on the camera while in motion. It DOES NOT program the factory navi to accept the camera - only GM techs can do that.

I just went to the dealer for an oil change and while I was there I asked what they would charge me to hook up a tech 2 to my truck and set the Nav unit to add the backup camera option. I got a blank stare. I explained what I've read here and he says he'll look into it.

When my truck was ready he says that nobody knows anything about what I am talking about and that my truck does not have a rear camera (no kidding) and that GM sells a kit that they could install if I want it.

I explained that I could get my own camera and run the wires and connect it myself but I've read that I need my Nav unit updated to display the camera.

More blank stare.

So....can somebody on here confirm that they have a NON-DVD factory Nav system (Bose) that they have had reprogrammed to allow for a backup camera?

One of the challenges we get at just about every dealership we service is that the techs can't grasp a lot of what we do, they ONLY do what GM tells them to do.

Having said that, here's what you say to your dealer: "I know my vehicle doesn't have a camera, but re-program my navi as though my vehicle came with one."

The option sticker in the glove box will give them all the pertinent option codes (UQA, Y91, etc.) they need to be able to account for all the options the vehicle is currently equipped with, and they just have to turn on the box (when they are programming those options in the GM TIS) that shows the vehicle IS equipped with backup camera EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT. When they finish the programming and give the truck back to you, you will be able to add a camera and have it work as soon as you power it up.

Here's the process for 2008-down (2009-up changed in that the dealer cannot do remote TECH2 programming anymore - they have to have the truck connected via cable or wireless network to the GM TIS):

Steps for tech II on GM 07

plug unit into OBD II then power
enter
service programming system
enter
Request info
Make sure you are updated to most current software
Enter
Choose vehicle id
Year
Passenger car etc
Make of car
Turn off all power consuming devices in the car
Continue
System will automatically cycle to collect necessary information
Key off
Disconnect

At the TIS GM web computer Computer

Plug in all cables
Go to gm website
Go to TIS 2000
Service programming system
VIN number of car. Push yes
Choose your category: choose navigation
Drop down categories
Audio/eq/backup camera, etc
Select the folder you want
Check the designated box. (THIS IS WHERE THEY TELL IT THAT THE CAMERA IS PRESENT) Program will not allow you to move forward if the incorrect box is checked
Every time an option is changed you will need to push OK
At the bottom it recaps everything you have done. Push OK
Once that is done the tech II will be updated with the new car info automatically.

Then unplug the tech II, take it to the car, make sure the key is off and plug in the tech II

Turn the key on and turn the lights off as well as any power draining items
Power on
Request info
PROGRAM INFORMATION
Tech II will update automatically., leave unit plugged for 30 seconds after installation is complete.
Turn key off
Unplug tech II

I may be mistaken here but, you said your NAV is non-DVD? I don't think it has the software to support the rearview video feed then. So adding a backup camera to your NAV isn't possible. But I may be wrong here. I added a rearview camera to my Bose NAV DVD radio. The dealer charged me $50 to unlock it. Took a little while because the tech screwed up and had to reprogram the whole unit But now I have my rearview camera and ran the video cables directly to the wire harness and found the factory camera power supply so it stays on for that brief moment once you put it back into drive. Also, I can toggle the camera settings from my main menu screen.
