What Is The One Truck You Would Restore?

If someone gave you $100,000 and said, "build me a pickup truck, and when your done, keep it!"

what would you build?

what kinda powertrain would you do?

what would you use it for?

if it were me i have two different directions i would go!

first one would be restore a 1995-98 single cab fleet side C/K1500 as a road racer. C6 Corvette Z06 powertrain, suspension, and wheels, painted crystal red metallic, custom tan leather and suede interior. if you've seen the show "Trucks" i would build it like that Ford Ranger/Cobra road racer they're doing, except my way.

the other one i would do is a 2nd gen C/K2500 4x4. lifted with a bulletproof powertrain and suspension. new duramax engine, retrofit the new Sierra Denali or Silverado LTZ interior in it. just a solid cool classic with some new technology in it. haven't really decided which year to go with on that one yet, but i would convert it into a crew cab, short bed! it would probably be easier to find a salvaged GMT900 2500 with the duramax and a straight frame, then fit the 2nd gen cab and bed to the newer chassis!

I would just buy Stacey David's machine "Copperhead" and then have money left over for other toys. That truck fits my dream ride to a T, fast, slick looking, a color that stands out as different, and he did it all very tastefully. Oh, and it is a classic!

First choice would be a 69 K5 Blazer. All updated power train, Vortec 454 built to the hilt, 6-8" lift 38in super swampers and the complete interior out of an escalade or denali.

Oh crap, so many options flying around in my head right now.

My absolute favorite dream vehicle would be a Ford Model T Pickup Rat Rod wrapped around a 572 Bowtie, Corvette 6-speed manual, and a custom suspension, costom tube frame, etc. Its hard to explain the image in my mind, but trust me, its a killer looking sports car slayer.

I already own my dream vehicle. :D But fuel injection at some point in the future would be a welcome mod...

There's always been a place in my heart for the 67-72 era C/Ks. To give you an idea of my dream, think of project "Wild Willy's" done on a 69-72 K-5 Blazer, just with a different color.

i would find a good shape 03-07(classic) 2500HD 4x4, Cover the whole truck in Black line-x, Bulletproof front and rear bumpers also powder coated flat black with PIAA HID's and winch installed, underneath would be ford 1-ton straight axle front diff with all ford front end parts sitting on an adjustable 12" Kelderman Air Lift, 38x15.5R20 Mickey thompson MTZ's wrapping around some type of black 20x12 rim. As for a stereo, two 250 amp alt, 2 deep cycles, back seat would be removed to make way for four 15" FI BTL's mounted in custom fiberglass ported enclosure powered by 4 Hifonics Broutus BRZ2400.1D amps, all 4/0 gauge wiring 10 farad cap for each amp. hit the mids and highs with Focal components and tweets all powered by two 4 channel rockford amps and kicker crossover all controlled with a Pioneer Double Din head unit. she would pound good.

Between the legs would be an 03-07 stroked/cammed fully built 5.9 litre cummins with some twin or maybe triple turbo config, dual fueler, extensive bottom/top end work(capable of holding 650-800HP), 5" straight pipe goin into one single black 8" stack comin thru the box offest to the right a little bit, mated to a fully built 5 speed manual, southbend clutch, 4:56 gearing with air locker in the front and detroit locker in rear. Everything would be built with durability and strength in mind. i could go on forever with this :)

Find the 1964 Stepside my dad had before i came along.. it was black. Find it, put in an LS-7, with 6-speed, give it back to him to drive. Would really love to find the 1961 Impala he bought brand new and sold when i was in high school and restore that and give it back to him.. but the truck was pretty nice too. All his vehicles had a 283... i think the LS-7 would be more fun.

Buy a new dash and replace all the little broken/worn things on my '92, then buy a black 2011 Crew Cab Silvy fully loaded, then level it with ATX Mojaves for the hell of it.

    • Very interesting thread. Definitely didn’t expect to see this kind of mileage out of that engine.
    • Just did an injector/HPFP replacement on Pepper at 192,400 miles; close enough to 200K, RIGHT? (If 200K is considered life end and to me it isn't). But hey, to each his own.    Have never run a catch can on this vehicle. Back side of every valve looked like a new valve spray painted semigloss black. Port walls looked 'neat' (all a normal result of passive EGR via VVT) Zero build up even in AFM cylinders. Just color. It uses no measurable oil and never has.    At 155,000 I put her on E-85 and a borescope of the cylinders at plug change showed very clean pistons and valve faces. The replaced injector tips looked new. (It was the pump piston seal that was leaking). Oh well, have six good backups.    Still gets 28 mpg on gas (highway average) and over 20 (highway) on alky. UOA's look good and runs as good now as it did when I bought it. Better in fact.    What improvement would a Catch Can provide this motor?     And given all this I expect that IF I installed one I'd see some water/gas/oil vapor accumulation. Byproducts of normal combustion.   Having said that, IF my motor used an appreciable amount of oil I'd consider it a useful 'crutch' until I had the situation corrected OR if bore polished, until I junked it or rebuilt it to stave off repeated plug fouling.    I'm not telling you what I THINK. But what its DONE.
    • Love the look. I'm a SCSB lover myself.    Two items. 1.) A spacer changes scrub radius but this also changes when we use wheels of different offsets. A little isn't a big deal. 2.) Steel wheels, alloy wheels all have different thickness. Same effect on the stud and lug nut as a spacer. When hub centric the wheel isn't supported by the stud. It's supported by the hub. The stud just keeps it all together.
    • I had a evap sol go bad a couple weeks ago. . I replaced it.  While watching live data at the time I saw I had some cylinder 1 misfires. No MIL but on live data I could see ~50 at startup and about 70 more after an hour a drive all on cyl 1.  I also noticed that the LTFT were -5% to -15% always.  And that bank 2 is always -3% richer than bank 1. Even across all driving modes, city, highway, etc it’s always 3% richer than bank 1. So I start with the misfire. Swapped coil, plug, and plug wires from 1 to 3. No follow. I got an Injector reseal kit, pulled the D/s injector rail, swapped #1 and #3 injectors, resealed them, reinstalled and retested.  The misfire followed to 3. So I ordered and replaced all 8 injectors, spark plugs, and plug wires. Also replaced the 1 time use fuel pipes under the intake manifold.  Injectors that were in the truck since new were  Part # 12668390.  I replaced them with # 12742701 Got from RockAuto. Pretty certain they’re genuine and the correct ones. I called a friend at a parts store who told me “the 12742701 were the correct superseded part # for the originals I was replacing”. So started truck after replacing all that and it’s running -15 - -30 LTFTs. I reset the fuel trims with GDS2 and drove it for a 60 miles trip each way. There have been no changes in the LTFTs.  I checked if the HPFP was leaking into the crankcase. I removed the pvc and watched the trims. No difference.  I checked the alcohol content and it was at 10%  I’m out of ideas here. Truck seems to run great. Just always rich on the fuel trims.  Anyone with any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I ran an injector balance test just for the heck of it and it came back this. I’m confused.  I have gds2 and some other diag tools if anyone knows of anything I should test next.
