Throttle Body Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

This weekend I decided to put in a new air filter and I thought while the air filter is off, I'd go ahead a clean the throttle body. So I took off the intake tube and wipe down the throttle body with a rag, no chemicals. I did not remove the throttle body, just opened up the flap and wiped down. I have a NNBS 2007 with 75K miles. Now the engine takes a long time to rev down afterwards. I called a local mechanic shop and they told me that the valve/flapper should not have been opened without the truck running and will cost around $500 to repair.

Did I just make a $500 error or is there a way to reset back to factor? Or is there a way to correct this?

Thanks,

Adam

I don't think opening up the throttle body will hurt anything. But, you obviously disturbed something in while you were cleaning, possibly the mass air flow sensor in the intake tube. Most rags produce lint that will definitely affect sensors, etc. Do you have a check engine light now? Make sure that the connector on the MAF is seated properly. You may have wiped dirt onto it causing it to act up. Someone else will hopefully chime in here with a good way to clean the MAF. I do know that when cleaning takes place, it takes a bit for the truck to " relearn" its behavior.

Did you ask them how you are supposed to clean it with the truck running wide open? You also need to find out what they want to charge you $500 for.

You definately don't want to run your engine without the air intake connected. Probably going to suck in a lot of dirt that way.

The MAF Sensor is located closest to the Air Filter correct? If so then I did not touch that. I only missed with the opening of the TB and open the flap to wipe it down. The rag was caked with carbon. I'm wondering if I buy TB Cleaner and spray around the hinge area of the flap, with that work? No Check Engine light has come on. The truck runs a bit smoother. It idles fine or normal. It just take a bit for the RPMs to come down. Also if I punch the gas pedal, the RPM will stay around 3K for a few seconds and then finally comes down. Like a choke system.

Yes. I know that there are good cleaners out there for both the MAF and throttle body but have no experience doing it to these trucks as mine only has 29k on it.

Replace the throttle body????? Man.... I must really be out of touch. I can see the TPS....MAYBE.

One things for sure, that doesn't sound like a very safe condition. If you have to do a panic stop, you want that sucker to close the instant that you let off the throttle.

Check to make sure you didnt get any of the rag caught on the edge of the throttle body plate that's making it "stick".

Also would try unplugging the throttle control, disconnecting the battery, open/close the flapper a few times (make sure it returns back to closed position), then plug in battery, wait a minute or two and then plug the throttle controller back in.

Check for vacuum lines or other electrical connections that you may have disturbed while removing the intake tube (theres a few around there).

Next time you want to clean the throttle body, turn the key to ON but don't start it. Have your buddy place the accelerator to the floor and hold it there, while it is wide open spray only approved Throttle Body cleaner in it all around and if you want to use a rage to clean up use a lint free rag. Then let it sit for 15-30 minutes to dry out before you start it. You won't have any problems.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

I guess my next question is if the TB doesn't want to relearn based off the article that JFM1982 mentioned, what's next? Off to the Dealer to fix it? The mechanic and $500? My biggest concern is causing other problems like the transmission shifting issue or anything else. Because the RPMs do not come down at the normal rate, the truck wants to go and I'm having to break a bit more/harder to keep the truck from pushing forward. This makes me think of causing strain on the transmission. Maybe not and maybe I'm just over analyzing it.

Man I thought I was doing something simple and here I am. These trucks are too sensitive or I need to just stay away and let real mechanics do the work.

My truck did the samething when I cleaned the throttle body. I took it for a 30 min drive. That fixed the problem. The computer needs to relearn the new position. Please read this link.

i agree, i would disconnect the battery for a while and then take it on a drive to relearn. I have pulled my tb off tons of times and held the plate open and i've never had any problems.

and guess what now you know which mechanic to NOT take it to when you have a real problem

same thing happened to me, i opened the tb by hand when cleaning. i just drove it, being careful to cater to the high idle speed and so on. (unhooked battery, and hooked back up and still no help). the pcm adjusted itself, and i noticed more improvement the more i drove it. just take it easy on it and putt around a little bit, and it should work itself out.
