Buying Auto Parts

I recently bought a shock for an old second hand truck I'm trying to fix up, and despite telling the person that it's a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4, he gave me the wrong one.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why there would be so many differences between trucks of the same make/model/year? What information would I have to give to make sure I get the right part?

I'd like to buy online too since it may be cheaper, but I wouldn't want to get something for a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4 and find out it's the wrong part.

There were actually two different body styles of 2500 trucks made in 2000. Sometimes the parts places get confused by this. If you have the older body style, your truck looks like a 98. If its the newer body style, your truck looks just like a 01-02.

I see. From the looks of it (using google image search), mine is a new body style. I'll remember to mention that next time in case that changes things. Also it seems to be a heavy duty version, so I'm sure that changes things as well.

Does anyone know of any good online part stores that ship to Canada?

They should ask you if you have the Classic or Silverardo or Sierra. If you tell them the new body style they should get it but not always. I get that sometimes with my 99.
