Making My Own Steps

After installing my BL, Ive become tired of the wife cursing me every time she rides with me. So, I decided to make some new steps. I started with an idea from N-fab and Go Rhino, and an older style from Four Real Steel. Here is what Ive got so far. What do you think.

 

 

 

 

 

The main tube is 1.5" EMT conduit and the steps are 1" EMT. Ive still got a few more bars to tack into place, but I just had to see what they would look like.

Well, I made them bigger than the commercially available ones because I wanted to be able to put both feet on it and lean over into the truck. Thats why the rear hoop is so far forward. I wanted my wife to be able to stand on it with both feet and put our son in his car seat, which is belted into the middle of the rear seat. The rear hoop looks like its too far forward, but its centered on the rear floorboard. Im hoping it wont look too bad When I get the secondary horizontal tube on there.

 

Now next question. Should I paint it black to match the bumper, or paint it silver. Looking at this picture, the silver looks good, but I dont want it to look too out of place.

Look good, but for me they'd pick up a lot of mud

Yeah, they will get muddy offroad......................if it ever rains here. But thats ok with me. the Westin bars I had on it before causght mud too and it didnt bother me.

Being that EMT conduit is rather thin walled, have you tried standing on them to see if they will bend?

Yeah, its definately gonna get some texture. If I paint it black, Im gonna shoot the whole thing in bedliner to match the front bumper. But, if I paint it silver, Im gonna paint the step pads with the bedliner just for texture.

EMT is the same wall thickness as the N-fab tubes. The only difference is that EMT is galvenized. I researched it to make sure because I wanted to save weight, but not at the expense of strength. i guess I could have used regular tubing of a similar wall thickness, but none of the steel yards around here carry anything but Sch. 40 or Sch. 80 structural pipe.

My vote is black for sure, will match your brush guard nicely. If you don't mind me asking, how much has it cost you to make those?
