Synthetic Oil

i have a 05 silvy and i had/have approx 1000 miles on my synthetic oil and then the truck sat for a year (started every now and then) but i am wondering if synthetic oil breaks down over time like conventional oil does the oil looks brand new but when its 50$ for the oil i figured i would make sure im not just wasting money by changing it when there is no point.

It doesn't break down, but I'd change it. Could be moisture collected and have some water in it. They always say so many miles or 1 year :jester:

General rule is to at least change out the oil once a year if the vehicle does not see very many miles and sits for long periods of time. For the cost on an annual basis it really isn't that expensive to change it out.

I just finished installing a '00 GMC Jimmy 4.3 in a '89 S10 Blazer. Anyway, the Jimmy engine had been sitting 19 months with the same oil in it, stored in an enclosed trailer. When I took it out & mounted it to the stand, I drained the oil. The first 2 seconds of draining was PURE WATER. Then it turned milky, then the normal oil. So all that water had accumulated in the bottom of the pan over the course of nearly 2 years. I'd say close to a quart of water anyway. Food for thought!

Oil is the life blood of the engine. Not worth risking a $5,000 engine over $50 worth of oil, change the oil. The fact that it was started occasionally is even more reason to change it. Starting the engine and not driving it can produce condensation inside the engine that will never dissipate by letting it idle.

I agree one year on a change, starting and running for a few min's not good they do not get hot enough for long enough to dissipate the moisture.

I always buy my synthetic oil (wouldn't use anything else) at AutoZone. If you watch their sales, they usually have one brand or other on sale for $30 with a free oil filter. I buy it whenever they have Mobile1 with the Mobile1 filter free (that filter is $14).

What do you guys think about start using synthetic oil in a 2000 with 75,000 miles on it? Guy i work with said the synthetic is so thin that it might start to leak in places since its a 11 year old truck. The guy that had the truck before me just used reg 5w30 mobil oil. Should i just stick to the mobil oil or change to synthetic?

Any special reason you want to switch? Switching now would not be an issue but if you are going to stick with your current oil change interval then there isn't any need to switch unless you just want too.

The advantage to synthetic are better internal engine cleaning and cooling, longer drain intervals and better oil flow in extreme cold as well as better protection in extreme heat.

But like I said, if you are just going to stick with a 3 to 5k oil change I would just continue with what you have been using.

The oil viscosity is the same. The problem with oil leaking stems from the synthetic oil doing a much better job of cleaning sludge out of the engine. A lot of engines have cracked gaskets that are plugged with sludge. When the synthetic oil cleans out the sludge, the gasket leaks.

Other than that, I highly recommend synthetic oil. If a gasket leaks, replace it. It would leak sooner or later anyway.

I would recommend changing the 1st dose of synthetic and filter after 3K miles (to get rid of the sludge and avoid a clogged filter). After that, every 7-9K.

You should be fine. I run synthetic in my 03 tahoe with just over 187,000 miles.

Just want to keep this truck a long time. He put slick 50 in every other oil change also to act as a synthetic he said. But im not going to use slick 50. Was dead set on using snythetic mobil 1 till my co. worker made that comment about eaking since its a older truck.

I would run it in a heartbeat, no questions. Just run an eng. flush through it takes about 15 min's then change oil and filter. I would use the weight auto mfg. recommends. I,ve used Amsoil for a long time, Harleys, Diesel eng. and gas. I use Mobile 1 now because of the cost.
I think any brand of Syn. oil would be better than regular oil.
