Truly Not Happy With My Truck...2010 Silverado Z71

I've had this truck for about a year + a few months now (just over a year) and it's got almost 30k miles on it. I bought it brand new...it's the 1st "brand new" showroom vehicle I have ever purchased.

Prior to this truck I had several 3/4-ton and 1-ton Ford diesel trucks. All crew-cab, 4x4, lariat, etc...

When I decided to go back down to a 1/2-ton truck I wanted to give Chevy a try again. I used to have Chevy trucks years ago and the only reason I went to Ford was I feel they have a better diesel platform than Chevy does. But that's not really the issue.

I do NOT like all the issues I'm having with this truck.

1. it burns/uses oil - I have to add about half a quart between oil changes and I get the "engine" warning light almost every time it's about to be time to change the oil...because it's low again.

2. paint is peeling off the door handles on both driver and passenger doors (front doors only).

3. driver's door lock has stopped going down automatically with the button (remote and on the door).

I have an appointment because all this stuff should be handled under warranty...but all in all this is the WORST experience I've had in the 1st year owning a vehicle. It is 100% factory original (other than the wheels), zero modifications mechanically or in any way.

1. Sounds great to me! Means it's a well tuned machine able to tell you just when it's time for a tune-up!

2. You might have particularly oily skin which has a negative PH level that corrodes the paint.

3. You will never lock yourself out of your truck!

I doubt that the oil level dropping a pint from full would trigger any warning light. Are you or your oil changer putting in the required 6 quarts instead of the typical 5 that cars or the older 5.7L required?

and are you using the correct weight oil? the AFM system needs the correct oil weight, if you use anything outside that (5w30) you will get a MIL light for improper oil weight.

Man i feel for ya. The oil consumption would be more of a pain than an issue but I get your frustration and the other issues will be fixed. I've had 2 GMT-900's and both have been awesome. My 11 has 15,000 miles on it and it doesn't use a drop of oil and I've not had 1 issue with it.

Keep us posted on what the dealership tells you.

im more concerned with the thought that ford has a better diesel truck........... i cant count the number of horror stories i have seen and heard of the 6.0...and the 6.4

OP, I feel you.

My truck was a pain in the ass for the first 2 years. I went back for 5 bulletin fixes. Evap system, leaking oil (bad seals), tapping on the windshield, power steering rack leaking, exhaust clamp that was installed improperly, engine rattle (which was exhaust ring, or some bullshit), tranny shifting irregular.

Since then my truck has really grown on me. The paint thing is bullshit. As for the oil consumption. Every motor is different and you got a bitch. Really sucks. My biggest complaint was the dealership not taking 4 hrs to fix easy stuff. Dealerships suck.

At what milage do you change your oil? I change mine every 3000-5000 miles and have never had to add oil. But when my wife's Cobalt was new we waited for the oil life moniter to tell us when to change the oil. At 20% (about 8000 miles) I checked the oil and it was over a quart low. So we had the oil changed, and decided to just change it at 3000-5000 miles. It hasn't burnt a drop of oil since. If you wait until the oil life moniter says change the oil I'm guessing its normal to have to top off the oil. I check my oil monthly. Its routine for me because I had my 1990 C1500 for 13 years and I always had to add oil. After awhile my old truck started to spew a cloud of blue smoke at every start-up, but the truck still ran like a champ. It never leaked a drop, but still drank oil. The only reason I traded it in was because it only seated 3 and my family grew to 4! I still can't believe how my new truck has never burnt a drop of oil. Gotta love my Chevy.

-A half a quart between oil changes? Nothing and way within GM oil consumption specs if I recall. However, it would be worth having checked.

-As long as you are under 36k, the handles should be covered.

-The door lock thing has become a common sight at the dealer I work at. What has 95% been the culprit on them is the door lock actuator.

As much as it sucks to have a few issues with a new vehicle, you are also stating its your first brand new vehicle. Unfortunately these things are all mass produced and if you look problems per 100 vehicles in the first year every manufacturer has plenty of them. A used, but fairly new vehicle has already had these initial problems fixed before you bought it.

On that note, a half a liter of oil between changes isnt bad at all.

never heard of the painted handles peeling.

there are tons of electronics in cars nowadays, some will most definitely fail (and fords door lock actuators seem to be the worst)

All in all, all cars are problems, at least you have warranty, I hope they fix you up quick and easy and you have no more problems!

It's always a disappointment when you have problems with a new vehicle. I'm glad you are still under warranty. Maybe the dealer can take care of the bulk of these problems. I doubt they'll do anything about the oil consumption unless it is excessive.

The problem is, and has been stated, with all the complex parts, electronics, etc, it's amazing to me that any manufacturer screws them together with any reliability. I've owned many different brands, American and import. Usually after the teething pains of getting the initial problems fixed you're good to go for a while. Hope that is the case with you. But if you're looking for greener grass somewhere else, I've found it doesn't seem to exist, not anymore at least

Driver's side door lock issue on my 2008 Tahow as well. What a PITA. I feel for you on that one!

Never heard that one before. You couldn't give me any of the newer 6.x Ford diesels. The old 7.3 was good.

Oil usage can be normal with some oils and suggests an inferior oil.

Volatization is a term used to describe what happens to a fluid when it is heated to the point it begins to "boil off." Upon reaching a certain temperature, oil will begin to lose some of its lighter weight molecules as they vaporize and leave heavier weight molecules behind. Not only does this cause higher oil consumption, it causes increased viscosity, making the oil more difficult to circulate through the lubrication system. The thicker oil left behind after volatization contributes to damaging deposits, sticky piston rings and oil blow-by, all of which contribute to reduced engine life, reduced fuel economy and increased air pollution.

At one time it was not uncommon for typical conventional oils to experience 20-30 percent boil-off in the NOACK Volatility Test. Today’s API standard for SM and SN oils is 15 percent, putting greater demands on oil manufacturers. Premium synthetic oils are significantly more resistant to these effects, with some of the best in the 4.5 to 6 percent range.
