Truck refuses to warm up

I have a 2000 4.8 4L60E RCSB Sierra Z71 with 287,XXX miles on her and for the last week the gauges are showing the truck is refusing to warm up. Being a manager at walmart during the holidays i have not had time to actually do any test and probably wont have time but the temp gauge is reading a little less than halfway between 160 and 210 (im guessing about 180) whereas it has a 187 thermostat in it and normally runs a little less than 210. Even after running for several hours and miles it still will not get any warmer than 180(?). Judging by the seat of my butt dyno millage and hp seem to be suffering. would i be wrong thinking a simple thermostat replacement would fix this? if any other info is needed ask and i will post it. thanks in advance for any help. i plan on throwing parts at it after work tomorrow so a quick response would be nice.

Thermostats are cheap enough - might as well give it a shot. 90% of the time it's at fault on older vehicles anyway. Also gives an excuse to flush the system and add some fresh coolant & distilled water.

Just an update the thermostat replacement fixed my problem. the inner seal of the thermostat had blown out and the plunger was loose. surprisingly enough the one in the truck originally seemed to be the factory one since it had GM stamped on it. that little sucker was a trooper going through all those miles :driving:
