Transmission not shifting all of a sudden

I have a stock 97 Z71 4WD w/ 221k. Last night on the way home it would not shift out of 2ed gear. Checked fluid and it was red and didn't smell burnt. Did notice it had too much in it though.

Any advice before I take it out for rebuild?

make sure your cooler is flushed before the tranny is put back in and shift adapts are reset

I just test drove it and now it is shifting thru all gears as normal. I think I will have a fluid service as well as blow out the cooler lines and go from there. Hope that does the trick. When it initially stuck in 2ed gear I was out and about and had it running for about 2 hours solid(didn't turn it off while stationary to keep the heater on) I limped it home and started checking it out this morning.

Any more advice on what kind of service I can have done w/ out removing the trans?

your 3-4 clutch is done ,my post was while its out getting rebuilt and changing the fluid now does not fix worn out clutches,how many times do i have to say that???? lol

 

my 3-4 clutch went slowly after doin some highway time,it would work cold and as it warmed it was hit and miss,,remember that the clutch piston can only move so far after the fiber material is all gone ..

 

you have a decision to make,the truck is 14 yrs old with a pile of miles on it,maybe sell it with full disclosure and get a newer truck,
