Hooray for Big Filters!!

People have been doing this for years....... It is even listed in the back of the WIX filter catalog for most filters. Note, during an engine transplant that moves your filter into the wrong location, this is the section that becomes your best friend. .. ...

 

The 350's had a 1060 in 2wd form and 1036 in 4wd form. You could on a 2wd place a 1794 filter in its spot, it is a 2 quart filter instead of 1 quart as the 1060 had.

 

Now, with that said, if your in warranty, play buy the GM rules. PF what ever they say or its equivalant in another brand (Magnuson-Moss Act, Tie-in-Sales). But if your out of warranty feel free to add the larger filter and extra capacity.

 

The extra capacity could bring your engine oil temp down a little (especially with an oil cooler), as you now have more oil in the system. Therefor adding more oil to be circulated around in the system. If your thinking that way. Edgewise, the add oil in the oil filter, could result in more oil to the top of the block quicker after starting the engine. Or, the extra oil could be a plus if you poked a hole in your filter, or oil pan.

 

Now, if your thinking about debris that entered the engine in keeping the oil clean of that debris. Your on the wrong end of the engine. That is done in the air filter. If you wait for it to finally find its way to the oil filter, you've allowed the trash in the engine and allowed it to pass by the rings and down into the oil (or other area of entry into the oiling system). Personally I want a HIGH quality NON-OIL CHARGED air filter. Oil does not play well with MAF sensors.

 

Ya, Ford just hasn't ever got the picture of where to put the blasted oil filter........ Servicing that sucks on most RWD Fords. .. ... I even have several Ford products that you have to turn the steering wheel the correct way before attempting to remove the filter for the required room. Even have a couple I added remote filters to just because of the space issue.

Speaking of terrible to replace filters... try replacing a oil filter on a OHV 2.2 sunfire, mofo is sideways need a socket, or 20 mins of time with a strap wrench. Glad the ecotech is much more user friendly, I guess my sunfire was from a time of "hope they pay the dealer to do it" time. I'll still do it myself, only cause I have access to a hoist.

From all that I have read the filter characteristics appear to be the same (relief and anti drainback valves). And there are a number of new GM models that come with the PF63 that say replace with the PF48. So they both have the same threads. This topic has been discussed before around the net. I will be changing to a PF63 with my next oil change.

As I've written before, if you want better filtration in the AC Delco line, go to the UPF (black can) series.

Do they even make those anymore? I was under the impression that AC Delco quit manufacturing their Ultraguard Gold (black can) oil filters years ago.

i've been running the longer filter on my fbody cars for years (many of us have). on the ls1 motors the longer filter does hand just below the pan... i understand the potential for disaster, but 4 ls1 cars in 14 years and i've yet to have a problem.

 

i'll be putting the longer filter on my truck next filter change - thank you!

 

ps - since we're throwing gas on the fire i also use napa gold filters instead of ac delco if anyone wants to start that debate ;)

What's to debate, NAPA gold is a premium filter, made by WiX I believe.

Other way around on the 48/63 stuff. Any/all 2011 and up high feature V6 engines (3.0, 3.6 V6) can and may leave the factory with a 48, but the service filter is the 63. As far as I see, there was no reason given by GM for the filter switch but I think its due to timing chain stretch issues in the Lambda trucks (side note: Long oil change intervals and dino oil seems to be common amogst those issues with the chains). Bigger filter with more filtering media to pair up with the OLM and now the use of Dexos. GM does say that a 63 can go on pre 2011 high feature V6's, no problem.

 

GM has not said, however, if a 63 can be used on trucks, so personally, I wouldn't run one unless GM puts it on from the factory or if they say its doable.

Well, you can always buy the Wix filter cross reference. It's a whopping 4.8" tall. Go Big! :ughdance:

Ding, ding, ding! That is the bottom line folks. Yes the 48 and 63 have very similar specs but that argument isnt going to work in warranty land if you have any issues. You need to follow GM's spec on the filter to avoid any warranty problems and be aware you need to follow GM's spec. Not the dealer, not a gm mechanic but GM themselves.

I have talked about the advantages of a taller filter in one of my previous posts but the slight advantages are not worth the trouble it could cause if you are still under warranty.

I'd like to see them use a cartridge filter like my Cruze and my new Jeep. The plastic filter cartridge housing is reusable - you only replace the paper filter element. Plus there's a big 24mm "bolt" on the housing so you don't need a filter wrench. The best part is you can visually inspect the old filter element to see whether there's anything in there, like metal chips, etc.

A different application but shows the variations in size and quality for a specific application between brands of filters. I have heard a few people who cut delco filters open and were not impressed.. they did not hurl like when they saw a fram opened up but not as good as they expected..

 

After opening up a OEM purflux filter I took off my car I was amazed at the quality and could see why the guys in Modena chose it. It has the zig zag pleats.

The LS718 filter is the cross reference for the PF48 and has more filter area than a PF63 due to the herringbone pleats.

People need to stop complaining about the filter location. This is my second GM truck with the filter in that spot and I've never given it a second's thought. Buy a damn cup wrench to fit the filter and move on.

 

For the guys that complain about the filter location, get a Tundra and do an oil change on one of those....... there is nothing wrong with the location on our trucks and it is very easy to change.

 

 

Totally agree with both you guys. With a cup wrench there is no easier oil change than on a Silverado. How much easier could it be? I gave up on Tundra oil changes when I was driving the Yota. The cartridge, the skid plate....life's too short.

 

Compare the access of our filter to where they hid the filter on the Ford F-150 Ecoboost.

By the way, the FL500S Motorcraft filter on the Ecoboost will screw onto our trucks as well. Anyone game? I'll pass. Nothing wrong with a Motorcraft filter (it's bigger than the PF48), but it wasn't designed for our engines.

 

 

 

Yet another reason Im not gonna buy a Ford. I dont like the fact that they are designing these vehicles so that I cant work on them myself in my driveway. They all do it, but this is rediculous.

    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔           
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you  
    • Update. I started chasing down my symptoms. Started first with pulling valve covers and looked at everything. Everything looked good and couldn't hear or feel anything different. Then a compression test. 240 psi or really close on each cylinder. I was worried I was a tooth off of timing. Not bad for an engine with 173,000. Granted I did put new heads on. I sprayed water around the injector area to see if I could hear a change. Nothing. I hooked up my new hp tuner which I should have done in the first place but I don't really know what I'm looking at just yet but am learning. I noticed the fuel trims were way off so that told me I have to have either a bad injector or exhaust leak. New injectors, so I did the shop vac on blower and in the tail pipe. Sprayed soapy water and found the exhaust flange on the drivers side was leaking. I didn't think it would be that considereding I pulled the heads and left the manifolds attached. I did have the transmission replaced not long ago. They must have not seated them properly but I guess I didn't notice. I put in new gaskets on both sides. Which by the way isn't a bad job but I had a hard time getting them to seal right. Took two attempts. Reset the fuel trims and the ticking is gone, engine runs smooth and acceleration has improved. Got to feel the real difference with that stage 1 cam. It's not that big of a difference but it does add a little more. It feels like how the truck should have been from the factory.
    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package.
