Insulating garage door

Our garage has a standard 16' metal door. The door is very thin so it doesn't so anything at all for the temp in the garage so I want to insulate it.

I found the insulation kits at Home Depot and Lowes and the best one I've found so far is this one. http://www.lowes.com/pd_222457-10477-8+FT+GARAGE+DOOR+INS_0__?productId=3025310&Ntt=garage+insulation+kit&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dgarage%2Binsulation%2Bkit&facetInfo=

I'm going to need two kits to do my door. My question is, has anybody used one of the ready-to-use kits and how do they work?

I even thought about finding some foam type insulation and making my own garage door insulation kit. Has anybody insulated their garage and how did you do it?

Yep put a kit in (3 doors) about 5 yrs ago

Mine were precut just popped in

I will snap a photo shortly for you

And yes it does help to keep some heat in

I have some friends that put in a kit from Home Depot. It was the pink fiberglass that was pre-cut. They say that it really helps and also makes the door quieter too.

My door has some on it, was like that when i moved in tho, it sure cant hurt!. I did replace the outside rubber seal along the sides and top(rubber strip on a 1x2)

Well crud. Did not know there were kits, or maybe they were not around years ago when I insulated mine? I cut styrofoam panels to fit then mounted them using a combination of industrial adhesive (used in manufacture of cold drink dispensing machines) and single expanding urethane, Back then the urethane was $$$ now I think it is just $$, lol.

Really helps the garage and quiets the door to the point all you really hear are the rollers and hinges in the joints.

Here is mine

Basically the just pop into place, if I remember right I had to trim some of them

Thanks for the picture, Ryan.

How did it affect the function of the door? From what I've read with the added weight you need to have the door readjusted and the spring tension adjusted to compensate for the added weight.

I'm not sure how much it weights but I can't see the foam weight that much to have to readjust the door.

No change at all to the door. Those panels arent heavy at all.

I think I had to tweak the sensitivity controls a bit on mine but did not have toadjust the spring tension, the styrofoam I used was pretty light. Maybe the kits use denser styrofoam?

I would say the only difference with the kits are they have a thin plastic backing that faces out. The regular styafoam sheets do not so it helps if water or dirt gets on it.

The R value on that foam is 4.81. You can get foam that has double that R value. Cut with a circular saw or table saw. I would use Thermax or something similar.

I had two new garage doors installed a few years ago. They are white steel inside and out with insulation in between. The garage is a 18x7 door and the shop is a 10x10. Both were special order at a big box store. I got mine from a garage door company, and they were cheaper than the big box store plus they installed them. Just an FYI for anyone looking for a new door.

I would agree new door get it insulated, if it existing (like mine) buy the kits or make your own. I had to use 3 kits @ $49 each. My garage door at the time was only a few yrs old. Not worth replacing yet.
