How else would you state it? That is their hourly pay just like mine is way larger number before taxes, insurance, pension, etc. People just need to know what the hell they are talking about before jumping on the kill the union bandwagon.

Every single job out there advertises hourly as a gross pay. My employer wouldn't tell me my hourly rate after everything is taken out haha. I'm by no means trying to argue with you, I just don't know how else I could have put it. I said that was what they make before everything is taken out of their pay. It is the truth.

Clarification: I am a non-union government employee and have no opinion either way. I can't have one.

That is not a true apples to apples comparision tho. The $70 - $80 per hour union rate you mention includes the complete cost of the persons health insurance, dues and retirement. The hourly rate you get from your employer does not include the company covered portion of your insurance (which is the majority of that cost), 401K matching, and pension if you are lucky enough to get one as well as the cost to train a new employee.

I'm not going to argue about it but your statements, like I said, are what cause the negative attitude towards union workers. They never see that 70-80 an hour!!! they're lucky to see $30 of that!!! Your theory puts me at $87 an hr WITHOUT my hourly wage!!! Thats just my insurance rate!! Does that make any sense? Myself, like a lot of other people would say, F*** covering my insurance, give me the extra $87 an hr!

First off, don't worry about pay at first, find something you like to do and do well. The money will come with the proper skills, experience, and/or education in your field.

I work in Federal Law Enforcement and my starting salary was $42,000 a year, which at the time didn't seem like much. I have since worked my way up the pay scale and now have a salary of $80,000 but that's for all dayshift (8am-4pm) hours. I get an extra hourly percentage for night shift, along with working on Sundays, plus holiday pay when working on a holiday.

My total yearly salary and overtime for 2011 was $96,804.67. That was working many, many overtime shifts, holidays, and weekends. Not very fun but this year I can relax a little bit and not work any extra shifts if I don't have to.

Not rich by any means but living comfortable and don't really have to worry about not having money to pay my bills. Still paying for my college education, it was worth it I guess.

Get yourself an education, it will pay for itself after a few years. Money isn't everything, find something you like to do. If not, no matter how much money you get paid you will be miserable.

Buddy, when I sign a certified payroll for a project I have to pay 70-80 an hour for their services from our city funds. I don't really give a darn what they take home, we pay the full rate. So truthfully, the people who complain they get paid too much are right and wrong. They are right about what we have to pay them an hour, they are wrong by the statement that they make too much. They don't take home that 70-80 but I have to pay that rate.

I don't care what we pay them to be honest. We just have to budget for it.

EDIT: Most all of my buddies are union workers so that comment was definately not directed at giving the unions a bad name. Not at all actually. I'm now going to leave this thread and end the thread jack. Sorry OP.

I live in Maryland where we don't have to be remote to be a teacher. Last year I made $49,655 and that is a 189 days a year. I also worked summer school, which is 22 days or 154 hours at ~$38 an hour. Or in other words about ~$6000. I am 30 and my wife is 28. We live in a nice community and a 2000 square foot townhouse, she is also a stay at home mom and only works a couple evening once I get home. We just had a baby 6 months ago and the bill was $100. Best of all... I love my job! Working with kids is so much fun. I deal with 7th graders and teach them math. Will I ever be rich, probably not. I was that once when we owned the 3rd largest AC/Delco distributer in the country (Montgomery Automotive), and I never saw my dad. I vowed then and there, that I didn't care about money, but I wanted to be there for my son or daughter. Best of luck with your search.

My point was the hourly rate on your check never works out to the hourly rate you recieve. That was the point.

Two words...rail road. Good pay, benefits, retirement, the works. No degree nessesary, all training is paid for by the company (I work for Union Pacific). A basic day is about $230, add over time, and you're doing pretty good.

Just because thats what you sign off on, which I have no idea how to get you to understand this, that is NOT what they make an hour! Quit spreading the ignorance. You stated that you make $40k, so do you really only make $12k a year? You didnt figure your pay that way... quit figuring theirs.

I think he stated in his original post about the subject that the $70 -$80 he was referencing included insurance and benefits, I am not sure why you are still attacking him?

Ok, you obviously don't have a clue. The union hall requires that we pay them that $72 an hour. From there it is the Union who distrubutes the actual hourly pay. The reason people complain about the pay of Union workers is because of that large number you see. I don't have a comment either way but I'm trying to explain to you that regardless of what they take home we are REQUIRED to pay that $72 an hour by the Union. Like I said, we hold a wage rate meeting each year and the wages are accepted by the city. Therefore, I said that an Operating Engineer is paid 70-80 an hour before the union takes their share for pension, dues, and insurance.

He didn't, he said with just their dues coming out. If you were from this area and had to deal w/ all this crap thats been going around about union pay lately, you'd understand. Just because the hall or company charges that rate per hour per worker doesn't mean that the worker gets that amount of pay. Thats called business. All I am trying to convey is that a union worker doesn't make that much per hour. Like I said, he didnt figure his pay that way when he stated what he made. Quit figuring theirs and spreading the ignorance.

Why are you even arguing with me? I'm agree with you on the fact that they don't make what their paid wage is. I have explained several times that I am not bashing union workers, most are my closest friends, and that they don't take home the 70-80 wage I stated. I said that in my first post and continued to clarify that from then on.

I also said that these guys are starving from not having work. I never once said they are overpaid or that they aren't worth the salary. I'm now not sure why you are so angry at this when all I've done is state what the Union requires us to pay.

Edit: Just looked it up.

Operating Engineer

Total Hourly wage is just over $60

Fringes are just over $20

Actual pay is just under $40

Maybe that will end this argument because that is what we are required to pay a skilled OE, $60+.

Because you didnt clarify what you stated until you were called out on it. The guy is asking where to find a job making X amt of money, you're were talking about that union job and them making that much minus their dues. When everything hits the fan and strikes are threatened people act like union workers make too much money. All they hear, read, or see is exactly what you stated, their pay with benefits figured in. Then, people spread the ignorance. Like I said, you talked about making $40k plus all your benefits. You didnt figure them into your pay, quit figuring it into theirs.

OP, go towards management, in the mean time, try to get into a skilled trade. Once you're in, work your way up, if you have a college degree and you're not a slug, eventually they will make you management in the skilled trade. Especially since your young and they can "mold" you.
